HFGH - screws in roof?

Everyone has been so helpful and I really appreciate it. I have read so much on here I can't keep up with it all so here's another question. Those of you using screws are you using them on the roof panels too? What about vents are you doing screws and clips there or just clips?

We're hoping to be able to start putting plants in by this weekend! WooHoo!!

Thanks All!

Yes, we definately used screws on the roof panels, just like on the wall panels.

I personally could not figure out any way to secure the roof vent panels into the roof vent frames using either clips or screws. There was no place for the clips to go on my vent frames. So, I ended up caulking those panels in place. If there is something I'm missing, I hope someone will post here. I saw a post from Troykd a long time ago mentioning using clips on the roof vents, but for the life of me I can't see how (I even took the things down to study them.) I remain eternally confused on that point!

At least I'm clear on the roof panels...screw 'em down!

I agree put screws in the roof panels but be sure to use the screw with the neoprene washer on it.

Tighten only enough to compress the washer a little.

The vents are not enough area to bow enough to make then pull out from under the piece that holds them.

Some have reported the entire vent being ripped off but no panels have ever came out of the roof vents.

Well, I actually did have a panel blow partially out of the roof vent...it wiggled up so far in the frame that you could see the bottom edge of the poly panel, and then the wind got under the edge and pulled it up. I taped the popped-out panel corner down until I could get up there the next morning to remove the vent and fix it...that's when I took all four vents down and caulked them in place. No problems since.

If the vent poly panels didn't wiggle around in the frame, I agree, there's not enough area to have them bow out. I'm sure mine failed because the panel edge was exposed.

And also, our winds are really nasty here. I should be the poster kid for wind trouble! :-)

I used weatherstrip and caulking cord. It is in the weatherproofing section at HD. It is this soft claylike cord that you tear apart and I put it around all sides of the vent windows between the frame and the plastic panel. There are 8 cords stuck together and I used three squished together. So far they have held in tight.

I guess I assumed all panels were like mine but given the way these seem to be built in China and differ from day to day perhaps some panels will come out.

Mine fit so tight they can not come out.

The vents don't work very well but again for some that will be a problem for me it is not.

I have mine locked down and don't plan on ever opening them

Gardenerwantabe, I'm glad to know the loose vent panel problem doesn't occur in all the kits. Before I caulked them, my roof vent panels could scooch up and down in the frame by about 1/2". The frame did cover the panel edges, but only if they were positioned just so.

It's good to know that this is something that can vary from kit to kit. I'll modify my blog to let folks know they may or may not have this trouble. :-)

Sheri my vents were hard to open and close they did not fit all that well but after 1 season I decided that I would not use them anyway.

Most of the time our GH is in use we are heating it.
The last few weeks in the spring before we put the plants in the ground we need to cool.

I have a 16" fan in the peak of the rear and a motorized shutter in the front.

On the cool but sunny days the fan will run for a short time this is handy if we are not going to be home if home I just open the door some and don't need the fan.

Once it becomes warm enough to run the fan all afternoon then you want the roof vents closed anyway so I really have no need for the vents.

Every time I climb the ladder and yank the windows closed I say, "some day I'm not gonna use these (blankety-blank) things anymore!" I do remember your comments about not using yours, and that makes me feel better. I may stop using them too, I'm not sure yet.

If I could get them opening and closing smoothly again, I might rig a long handle like Pat(pcan-z9) did for hers, but right now they don't work smoothly enough. It's on the to do list (bang on windows.)

Pelicanhead, thanks for your post. I've looked at that soft caulking cord too and wondered about it, glad to know it has worked for you.

Sheri is the Sheriff Truck Stop still operating in
    Las Cruces NM.
I retired 15 years ago and don't get far from home any more.

I don't think so, I'm not familiar with it and can't find any listing. Maybe it was gobbled up by the Love's truck stop chain, they seem to be everywhere out here.

We retired and moved here only 2 years ago from TX, but I come from a family of truckers and farmers in Iowa. Both groups are the backbone of the country in my opinion. But I did not inherit good trucker genes (no sense of direction.) I'd deliver the load to the wrong state. :-)

Well Texas brings back some memories also I was radar-ed while racing another 18 wheeler near Sweet water,TX
He radar me at 126 MPH this was back in 1975 and it cost me $175.00 that was big money back then.

After paying the fine I called home and had money wired to the Sheriff Truck Stop in NM so I could make it to California.

LOL, now here I go saying nice things about truckers and you confess to racing 18 wheelers. Those TX guys got me (and DH) with the radar gun several times, but never at that speed! :-0
