Easy Does It

Has anyone noticed this rose being a slow grower? This is its 3rd year in my garden, and it's still no more than 18" tall. To be fair, the first year it spent the summer in its original pot underwatered all summer, then planted in October. But Earth Song was treated the same way, and it's enormous - 5 feet tall and at least 3 feet wide.

However, despite its small stature, it's blooming like crazy! The canes are so thin, the blooms make them bend down to or almost to the ground.

Anyone have any secrets to giving a slow grower a boost?

I planted my Easy Does It last spring.. It was maybe 12" high, few leaves-- no irrigation, the summer was filled with highest temps on record--many 100*... This yr--it was my first rose to bloom in a FULL flush.. It was literally covered with huge roses, buds and no BS...

    BUT our zones are different.

Mine never grew much either. It limped back from it's first winter and didn't survive the second.

I have six of them (I like this rose!) and they have all sat there for a year or two doing absolutely nothing but bloom, then all of a sudden grow several 3' or taller basals canes Maybe give them more time?

Dang if your photos aren't the epitome of rose porn, Hoovb. How much makeup and air brushing is involved, lol?
If sites and catalogs aren't buying your photos, then they just don't have good sense or well spent cents.

Not here. This rose was planted by my sister in her garden last spring and it is already approx 4x4. Quite fast growing in my opinion.

My experience, although brief, was similar to yours Deanna. Bloomed like crazy the first year on thin canes but didn't put on any new growth. The first winter it was killed almost down to the crown. After a month or so of looking for new growth I gave up when its recovery was almost non-existant (while other roses did well). Granted it was a record cold spell (minus 7) that did it in. I also don't know if mine was own root or grafted and the "help" wouldn't have had a clue at the nursery from which I bought it....Maryl

I bought a 3 gallon, grafted plant of Easy Does It locally about a year ago. It lives in a partially shady spot in a large pot on my back porch, doesn't get sprayed and has (so far) remained a very healthy, blooming machine. Size-wise it stayed a little less than two feet wide and tall until two weeks ago when it suddenly sprouted a very thick 4 ft cane. I really didn't expect that since it's in a pot in the shade. I get the feeling it may have to be moved into the garden soon. I have NO idea how big it's going to get.

Mine is an own root plant.

Two years ago I ordered an Easy Does It on its own root on line. Then I found one in Lowes. I planted them both in the same bed, full sun, good soil, well watered and tended. Both bloomed beautifully and grew in their first year; the grafted one is bigger, but perhaps not as many blooms. The second year they are both gorgeous, covered in huge ruffled blooms so heavily they can hardly support the blossoms. They are planated with a couple of Living Easys, and they are far superior. The foilage is clean and abundant. I love this rose. I know, Olga says to wait three years before making a judgment, but so far it has been great.

That Amos Pettingill is an aesthete no doubt about it. So I'm not surprized at all that he appreciates your photos, hoovb.
    Congratulations,

Just to add my two cents, and without anything helpful to add, I have one and without doing anything special, it is a big, vigorous rose for me. Own root, starting its third year with me, and tall, well-behaved, nicely thick canes. Blooms like crazy and my favourite (or tied with Julia Child).

    Olga,

Is your sister also in MD?
I am wondering what is her opinion on desease resistance of this rose here in Maryland.

Just bought one online - hope it will be as strong as KO roses for me. Love the color.

So---could this be the pink/apricot-or-yellow blended color rose that I have been seeking for my 2 x 3' raised bed, the rose that WON'T succumb to black spot like my minis have and the rose which will reward me even with minimal spraying?

This is Queens, NY we're talking about.

I have it in northern NJ and it does not get BS. It is a fantastic rose. I believe the NYBG rates it highly. Since they have a no spray rose garden, I usually use the them as my local guide.

It's been less than a week since I posted my original message. I worked out in the garden today and fertilized everything. I was surprised at the difference of how EDI looked today compared to last week. She had even more blooms, but they weren't bent over on the ground. Apparently the canes had thickened up and appeared to be a few inches taller. The only thing I can attribute it to is the inch of rain we got. Hopefully, the fert I gave her today will give her even more of a boost! Love, love, love this rose!

I bought EDI last summer as a band, potted it, and then planted it in the ground in the fall. I almost lost it over the winter --- it looked to me like the deer had munched it down. So far this year it has grown to about 20 inches high and doing very well. I am using liquid fence and finding a very high rate of success with it. (That should be a post of a different topic).

The extra "wow" factor I've found with this rose is how long it holds onto it's nice big blooms!

    I live in Central Maryland.

My EDIs are finally blooming nicely, so yesterday I told my boyfriend to smell them. To me it has a fairly strong, fruity fragrance that reminds me a little bit of melon. My boyfriend smelled it, and... nothing. "I guess it smells a bit like grass, like any other plant..." He can smell other roses in the garden (although he described my Jude the Obscure as smelling "like window cleaner").

Has anybody experienced something like this before?

Has anybody experienced something like this before?

Having a boyfriend that says JtO smells like window cleaner? No.

Having one nose owner say they can smell a rose and one nose owner say they can't--sure, all the time. Senses of smell vary widely among people. Also rose fragrance varies as well by time of day, age of plant, age of rose, humidity level, temperature.

Well, it wasn't variation because of the weather, etc, because I sniffed the rose, a minute later he sniffed it and said it smelled like nothing, and I sniffed it again immediately afterward to verify that it did still smell good to me. I think what struck me is that he didn't smell anything whatsoever, rather than just thinking it didn't smell good or strong.

Really? I bought mine in a one gallon from Chamblees last year and its been one of my most vigorous and best bloomers! Its also in kind of a shady spot...maybe it likes the shade for some reason.
