Well, it's probably way out of our league for the majority of people who post on this forum, since were in temperate to subtropical N. America. But, I'm going to take a stab at it.

It could be almost anything, probably a thousand trees I've never heard of and will never hear of.

However, it, at least superficially, resembles one of the large leaved, evergreen ficus species. Something along the lines of F. elastica or F. lyrata (both of which are common indoor foliage plants here). There are many, many more species beside those two.

Impossible to tell with the pictures provided. Ficus is as good of a guess as any, but, with those pictures, it's just a shot in the dark. The specific species that Denninmi listed are unlikely, but were probably just given as examples. With some really good quality pictures (especially, well-lit close-ups) more specific guesses would be possible.

Thanks for the try. It really resembles a ficus. Unfortunately I am not leaving more in Mozambique but I will try to get a friend to take a close picture. Otherwise I will go for the Ficus as I would like to grow it indoor.

I found a link of East African Trees. There are no pictures, but the scientific names are there and you can google for it using that information.

If that is the ocean in the background and based on the large foliage, Seagrape(Coccoloba uvifera) is a fleeting possibility. It tolerates saline conditions and has large leaves. Gargantuan stab in the dark.

Clusia?

Whatever it is it has been pruned into an oddity, that's for sure.
