Gean, I sat behind Peggy Martin at the HRF conference and had the opportunity to talk with her about this rose. I told her how much I loved the photo's of the rose and really wanted to grow it but didn't feel like I had room. I told her I had a climber that appeared to be damaged from a late freeze this year but that it was a small climber and that the space I had available was on a 4 ft fence but that I had a 7 x 7 ft trellis in front of the fence. She said that she thought that the rose could be grown in that space and would tolerate some pruning and shaping to keep it there. I think that you probably could train it horizontally on your 4 foot fence if you have enough room. The other option would be to drop a trellis behind the rose and up against the fence to give it more room to grow vertically as well as horizontally. Does any of this make sense? :-)

I was going to plant another Zeffy in this spot but when I read the story I liked the idea of supporting the rebuilding of an area devastated by the flood.

Does ARE also contibute to this fund or is it just Chamblee's??

Florence, yes, ARE, Chamblees and Petals from the Past in the Birmingham area all contribute, as do three other nurseries in Texas. There is an update to the story on the entry for Peggy Martin rose on the ARE site I just read from Dr. Welch. I linked to it below.

Hope it grows and blooms well for you! Mine has bloomed two tiny blossoms so far.

I have a rose that Vintage labled Denny's Louisiana Rambler that I thought was found by Peggy Martin. Is this the same rose? Mine is still in a gallon, not bloomed yet.

This is a pic of PM's blossom; I had to wait awhile to get a pic; not many blossoms on it. Is it the same as Denny's La Rambler?

Duchesse, the picture at that link you posted is exactly the reason I went ahead and put Peggy Martin on my 4-foot wire fence. I love the way it just tumbles down so fully over that fence in the picture.

I've only had this rose about 3 weeks and she has put out probably six inches of new growth. Mine came with a bunch of pretty pink flowers already on it. I can't wait to see what she does, and it is definitely a wonderful story and cause.

Just bringing up this old thread to say that today I saw Peggy Martin roses at Myra's nursery in Bay City TX that were wound around posts, sort of like the stripes on a barber's pole, covered with blooms. Really pretty---so of course I bought some. That's a good nursery too, incidentally, although it is just about at the end of the earth.
I intend to wrap the ones I bought around the posts of a "teepee" trellis made of cedar trees cut on our acreage, but now I'm thinking that may not be enough room for them to climb....the teepee is about five and a half feet tall at the pointy part. (apex?)

Peggy sent me a photo of the original rose on her property and I'm so sorry to say I can't locate it, but I can tell you that the rose covered an ample three-car shed with no problem. After I brought my rose home from Dallas in 2006, we built a trellis for it that runs the length of our shed. Planted a year ago, it has thrown about six 10-15 ft. canes, bloomed quite a bit and also blackspotted, though we hope that will disappear as it matures. Pamela, I believe Denny's Louisiana Rambler is a different rose. There were several found roses in Louisiana and Peggy had many of them. You could probably ask on the HRF forum and find out for sure, though.

I have a Peggy Martin rose happily climbing an arbor over my front door. It has a western exposure. It has been in the ground just over a year and is starting to come into full bloom. So very many flowers, and the canes are thornless. I love it!

Does this rose bloom more than once? I have seen it in a spring flush and its beautiful. But not sure about the rebloom. Can anyone comment on that?

I found out later that Denny's Louisiana Rambler is The Peggy Martin Rose.

The Peggy Martin Rose is pretty-much a once-bloomer. She can throw a few scattered clusters of flowers in late summer, however.

One of her main advantages, as far as I'm concerned, is the fact that she's almost completely thornless. I had to dig up and move mine this winter, and the job was almost a delight -- not having to deal with 7-8 foot thorny canes. That was one year's growth .... I can't wait to see what she'll do in her new spot this year.

My neighbor and rosarian postulated that Peggy Martin is 'Rene Andre'...it does look a lot like it. Mine is barely 9 months old and is taking off over the fence. It also had all of its leaves from last summer turn yellow last week, like it had blackspot...but it never has had any problems with disease...and now, its covered with new growth? Did it on purpose cut off the old leaves from nutrients to let the new ones emerge, like a deciduous tree? Pretty neat if she did that.

This will be Peggy's second year in my garden, and Rene Andre's first (he arrived from Vintage last summer) When he blooms, I'll let you know how similar the two roses are. To my eye, the photos of RA on HMF and other places show flowers that are way bigger than PM's. PM shows multiflora tendencies, while RA is of wichuriana descent.

Florence, I don't remember any fragrance to PM. This doesn't mean that there isn't any, if just means that my poor defective nose couldn't detect it.

Writing from Lumberton, Texas… my well established Peggy Martin has lost so many leaves. It looks like something is eating the entire leaf and leaving the nubs of the stems. I see some spidewebs and tiny spiders. Should I try spraying with Neem oil? anyone else have this problem? im in Zone 9.
