G'Nut, did you check out the FAQs for this forum? Winter Sowing is a specific technique for growing from seed. I bet your answers are right there. Here's a link. Give it a read, and then if you have more questions, come back. People here will be happy to answer them!

Here is a link that might be useful: Winter Sowing FAQs

WS is growing from seed in vented containers set outside during the winter. Does that help? Check the WS F&Q it will show you what WS is. Growing seeds under lights indoors is much different. ALso driect sowing seeds into the ground is different than WS. WS protects the seeds from birds and other animals and lets the seeds sprout when they are ready.
Hopefully that helped some. I am a bit tired :)

I went to the FAQ... it is awesome and very thorough, and I get the idea, and I understood that much... but thought I was missing something.... thanks.

It is a very simple process that some people may raise an eyebrow to, but it works without buying any expensive lights, or dealing with damp off. Plus, everyone on this forum is extremely nice, helpful, and knowledgeable! You should definately give it a try! If you have any questions, ask away!

wow, wendy2shoes, must have had to have a lot of containers for all that grass :) lol

While I'll second gardenluv's statement that "everyone on this forum is extremely nice, helpful, and knowledgeable," I'll qualify it by saying there are plenty of us here who are just beginning to learn about this method and have a ways to go before being "knowledgeable." So far I have 161 containers WSd based on faith alone, thanks to the generosity of folks on this forum willing to trade/share seeds. The weather outside may be frightful but it's nice and warm here on the WS forum.

I agree with Wendy.
