Mulch novice needs help

I live in Northern California and the summers get very hot here 95 to 100+. I usually grow flowers but also like to grow tomatoes too. I failed terribly with tomatoes this year and my flowers production was not very healthy. I try to stay with wildflowers since they do best in the heat but even my sunflowers did awful. The soil here is red clay dirt. I amend it with potting soil and some compost. I want to stay away from wood for mulch because the earwigs love the wood. Can anyone give me some tips on what to do and what would be a good mulch for me.

Thanks so much,

Cindy
