I just put about 2" of leaves in the bottom of mine. Works great. I have three buckets for the job-- I only use one at a time. When it's time to take out the scraps, I dump the current bucket, rinse it out, and set it aside to dry. I grab a clean dry bucket, throw in some leaves from the pile, and bring it inside and keep it next to the trash can. The buckets cost $1 each at the dollar store.

I have a stainless steel bowl with no liner. I think it holds about 1.5 gallons. I take it out at least once a day, and probably twice a day after a watermelon is cut.

I haven't been using anything to line my 1-gal ice cream bucket, but it does get funky with liquids in the bottom. I might start putting some sawdust in the bottom, great idea.

I fill the bucket about half-full with shredded junk mail to soak up the liquids.

I once used Bio-Bags but they did not break down quick enough and I hated the thought of paying for them. In the summer I just throw all vegetable trimmings into a bowl and that goes out after each meal to keep the fruit flies down. In the winter we use an ice cream pail and instead of lining when I prepare to take it out I add some water to the pail which will then go into my usually dry compost pile.

Paper scraps as collected in a separate bin are at the bottom of a plastic grocery bag that sets inside the step on trash container in the kitchen. The plastic bag is reusable & helps me pull out all the contents even if it's been a week setting in there.

Agree that those bio bags don't compost well at all.

I keep mine in the freezer in a plastic box that once held Cascade Complete pellets. No flies or smell that way.

I see no reason to line the 1 gallon milk jug we use with anything. When it gets icky we just replace the jug.

I use the plastic container with a lid that my coffee comes in. When I dump it, I spray it out with the garden hose. By the time it gets yucky anyway, I'm done with the next container of coffee.

I scrub my ice cream bucket out once in awhile and give it a soak with hot water and a tablespoon of bleach. Gives it a new lease on life for awhile.

Many years ago I found a stainless steel canister at some kitchen store. It had a gasket, but I got rid of that. The hard, clear plastic lid has some sort of hinge contraption, and someday I'll probably get rid of that. I would never think of lining it. I dump it about daily, rinse it at one of the rain barrel faucets, and take it back in. Even to wash it after that takes seconds. I collect coffee grounds and any leftovers from fruit and vegetables I eat at work in a big blue plastic Maxwell House coffee canister, and it also just gets rinsed at the rainbarrel. I couldn't imagine needing a liner. Just don't collect things in the house so long that it gets nasty. The pile I actively add to just gets whatever is in the compost bucket, then a forkful of shredded leaves to cover it, rinse the bucket (using the water to either moisten the pile or dumped wherever it's needed in the garden), then back in the house. It rarely takes me more than a minute or two.

We keep a lidded stainless steel canister next to the sink & it's lined w/ brown kraft paper from shopping bags, wax paper, baking parchment, depending what's on hand.

It sure makes it easier to empty, since nothing sticks to the sides that way & it helps soak up & contain liquids. & I've found stainless steel doesn't get as stinky as plastic containers do.

I recall my grandpa carefully carrying his package of newspaper-wrapped kitchen compostibles to the 'humus pile'; there was a trashcan under the kitchen sink, lined w/ newspaper & Grandpa emptied it every night.

No liners for me. I use an empty 3 lb plastic coffee container and lid. I just dump when full. I'm not afraid of smells or liquids either lol. Cheap and easy!

Like carolb_w_fl, I use a lidded stainless steel bucket and line it with whatever paper is handy. Just before I take it out to the pile, I fill it about 3/4 to the top with water. This plus the paper makes it easier to empty as the contents plop out nicely, and it adds needed water to the compost.

Any more than 3/4 full with water is too likely to slop over onto your feet on the way out.

We started just using recyclables that can either be composted directly or dumped and thrown in the recycling bin. It works pretty well...

I also use plastic coffee container with black lids. Before I dump the contents into the compost bin, I fill it up with water. It dumps out fairly clean. I will then pop the cover back and store the empty in the freezer. I will put partially filled ones in the freezer over night so they have little time to spoil. I may take them out the next day, fill with warm water and dump them during the day. (freezing the scraps causes them to break down even faster)

I use receipts from Pierre Cardin, Versache, and what ever shopping bags DW brings back from her monthly shopping sprees in Paris.

I tried those bio bags or eco bags for a while, still have some in the cabinet, but found that they didn't degrade quickly. Weeks later I'd see the bag still intact in the compost heap. They may be good for municipal collection but not for backyard composting.

Now for large quantities I use a plastic bucket, and for smaller ones a covered ceramic compost pail that sits on the countertop. When I dump them, I usually scour out any gunk with grasses from the heap. Once in a while I hose down the bucket and put the pail in the dishwasher.

I used those bio bags for a while back in 2006 or 2007, and I'm still finding relatively intact pieces in the pile. Granted I run a cold pile that's slower than many, but I've still gotten plenty of good compost out of it. I just keep throwing the green bio bag pieces back into the beginning pile.

The bio bags were convenient for carrying the scraps out to the pile, but I might just as well have used plastic bags. Now I'm trying to figure out what I can do with the unused roll I have under the sink.

No liner, but I do like putting a little shredded newspaper or junk mail in the bottom for slime prevention. Kitchen scraps go in a lidded bucket that once held 28 pounds of cat litter. It fits very nicely under the sink. Bucket gets rinsed after emptying, and every month or so it gets a vinegar-and-hot-water soak to keep odors down.
