There is an Irrigator tank, at the top and a water collector in the bottom of the frame, there is no water that gets behind the unit. totally safe to use indoors or outdoors.

this looks very cool, but anyone with two cents worth of wit will know that everything in that planter needs FULL SUN to grow - that means 6+hrs direct sunlight every day. Unless your using a grow light don't expect this to work as shown "indoors" :(
