find what works for you.

personally, I prefer the small foam plugs you put in with your fingers, but I don't like the little string...too many times that cord gets caught of brush, branches, etc. I also don't like the ear muffs for the same reason.

yet if I'm running the weedeater, I like the full face shield, hard hat, ear muff combo of a chainsaw hat.

Check gempler's, harbor freight, and the local Lowe's/Home Depot. you'll learn about NRI decibel ratings, claims made regarding various materials used...but in the end, your personal experience is what matters. I usually go for something with a decibel rating in the 31-33 range, slightly pear shaped, made out of some kind of foam. racing stripes optional

But I also have at least one pair of hard muffs in every shed and vehicle in addition to a box of plugs. I've found styles I've liked, and ones I personally think were designed as instruments of torture.

One winter I had a factory job, and company policy required ear protection, and they bought just about whatever you wanted. Maybe two or three people went for the hard ear muffs, and everyone else chose to use the cheap, disposable foam plugs.

I wear the foam plugs at metal concerts, and I still end up with no hearing for a couple of days. I'd go for the ear muffs for working with power equipment. AM Leonard has the whole gamut, if your local store doesn't.
