I think you need a larger t.v. stand. It could be white to match or the same finish as it is, to create an eclectic look. Or put the t.v. on the wall, then a really neat beachy console table underneath the t.v. Then storage to the left of the t.v. to store everything.

Thank you! We have considered putting it on the wall...and I've considered building shelves along the wall and tie into the unit, to add everything from books to frames...I've just kinda thrown everything on the shelving unit right now, not really doing much with it all yet.

Put it on the wall and get a long, low cabinet for electronics,painted white. Something sleek or funky antique and don't expect it to match. Or construct something to match the scale of the shelving unit.

Quick fix - move the shelf unit opposite the door, perpendicular to the wall to create a "foyer." Slide the TV to the right and go back to Goodwill. You seem pretty handy, so you can probably build a unit that will function as well or better than you can buy and will last longer. The IKEA is made for a different style of house. You picked this up with the heft of your shelf unit, that reflects the style of your door. Consider painting the shelf a different color -- not white -- maybe Crate and Barrel's fall golden yellow? Or a deeper shade than your wall color. Not white. Not brown. And also paint the TV furniture a different color, too. IKEA may suggest the color scheme to keep it young. Consider Craftsman color schemes. Or if you don't want to paint your wooden furniture -- add a bright table cloth that you dn't want to use again. I know its difficult to hang a TV on the wall. And you may not want to make huge holes in original plaster. Consider constructing a similar shelving unit for the right side of the room -- and painting it the same color, and putting your television on a wooden shelf (IKEA?) that rests of the shelves of the two bookshelves. How bout----put the TV on the wall----tip the shelf unit so it's horizontal and figure out a way to use that as your console/electronics storage? You'd already have the dividers/shelves to separate components----look for a mirror to fit the "top"---maybe even an over-the-door-type mirror----may even be worth it to have one cut to size---maybe mirrored squares on each end---just for an eclectic look---paint it a bright color if you 'd like---that just leaves the front---either leave them open or if too messy, maybe try to find some old cabinet doors or canvas/wicker/wood baskets you can slide in? Then decorate the wall with art/framed photos???

I think you need to start over. Get a buffet of some type and paint it a color. Put the TV on top if you don't want to hang it. You can find some good 70's style ones here but with a coat of bright paint it can be fabulous. I think that all those little picture frame on the shelf would be better hanging in groups or placed on a narrow shelves.

I like the idea of tipping the cabinet and saw something like that recently in a catalog. Some seventies breakfronts are very affordable. I have one in my basement that is split into two. The top part has glass doors and is a sizable bookcase and the bottom part is suitable for a television. I had to take apart the cabinet to get it downstairs, however. Good sources are ebay for under $1000, plus shipping. I paid much less at a thrift store -- under $200. Craigslist and Freecycle are good sources. You could also check out office furniture resellers. I purchased a top grade walnut credenza with two file drawers for $25, designed to look like a buffet.

By judgment of the picture,you are at a mismatch. I agree you need to fill that wall with a large entertainment unit. One that can give much needed space and arrangement for all your TV electronics and get the game console off the floor. I can tell your an inviting home owner from first glance of your entry door, your entertainment wall needs to match your welcome banner,to give that entry room a more comfortable atmosphere.
Also move the large display cabinet out or into another room and replace a smaller corresponding display to another area of this room. I would suggest some entertainment and accessories lines from our Home Elegance collections, very affordable furnishings with lasting appeal.

I think painting the stand under the TV white would tie it in with your bookcase. Take the heart off top of bookcase and maybe plant - makes it look cluttered. If you paint the stand you won't have to hang TV. Then if you want a beachy look, hang a wall hanging above the TV that looks beachy such as wooden oars or a brightly colored surf board ( you could find a used one) I think one of these things would add so much and give balance to the TV below. I have a lot with coastal themes and have a lighthouse in my own family room. I find it mood lifting.

It's best to Minimize what is going on in this area. The shelves should be painted black or maybe a dark blue w/ a tv stand in the same color. That echoes the black in the tv. Then go for the beach, surf look w/ bold sea shells, seagulls, or whatever you like that speaks sand & surf. It would be very helpful to show the rest of the room. If the door to the right is the entry then the placement of the tv could be better. Also what is the size of the room?

Paint the shelf blue, a darker blue like indigo and sand some off the corners and edges to give it a denim feel. Place the shelf close to the door sideways ( be sure to anchor it) and place only lovely beachy things on it. Move the TV into the corner, diagonal out into the room, if you cannot get a new stand right away paint this one a red color. As you have many pictures in frames, paint all the frames the same color and place them on the wall between the Tv and shelf in a montage fashion. Maybe white wash tv stand and paint frames reddish (coral red).
If you need a place to store CDs and other stuff that accompanies a TV obtain a seagrass basket and place that on shelf or open area of TV stand. The main things is to consolidate into three large mass areas with a triangular feel on that wall.

The best color I have ever used for a TV wall is Burnt Sienna from Home Depot. It is fabulous behind a TV and with the light coming into that room it would really loo beautiful. The rest of your colors might have to change a bit..

find a funky old buffet at Goodwill or some other resale shop ( since you have already shopped there!) . Make sure it is longer than your TV .. i would say a 6 in to a foot on each side. Paint it turquoise! Remove that basket on floor to left. The buffet should fill the space.Love it!

Mid century long low dressers make wonderful TV stands. But do switch the shelf to the other side to give the space rhythm instead of stair step effect leading your eye back out the door.

I am generally thought of as a good designer. I have mountains of magazines and books on decorating and design. I spend hours and hours looking at and studying the photos of rooms I like. I pour over every tiny detail. It has taken me about a decade to amass this library, buying one or two magazines a month. And that is the secret of my success. Fortunately you don't have to have your own collection like I do because now there's this. Houzz.com. There are over half a million photos mostly by great designers. Take your time, look at lots of pictures. Don't spend a lot of money on something you don't absolutely love. You'll get tired of it very quickly and want something else. It's okay to exactly duplicate a room you like, but the chances of it happening are slim. Whatever you do or try to copy will have your own unique interpretation added to it. Good luck!
