Fireplace decor/design dilemma

My husband and I would love to redo the wall with the fireplace. We bought the house not long ago and have some other projects going on so want to keep the cost down. Im thinking a great paint color to add a pop but am afraid of committing to it.
Would love to get rid of the gold around the fireplace-- Is there a special high heat black paint I can use for it?
The tile needs to go, but what to do instead? I love the idea of very creative, unique, (almost "weird" even). And something we can do ourselves. We are pretty handy.
Any other ideas for this family room?
We're putting in greyish/cool tones hardwood floors sometime this year.
Also adding a photo of the kitchen. I refinished the island (painted the cabinets, flipped the cabinet doors inside out, spray painted the hinges, and added new pulls) and like the way it turned out, so we;ll probably re-finish the rest of the kitchen too. I want it all to flow.
We're drawn to whites, grays, blues--cool tones. Clean and light
Kitchen backsplash will be some version of carrera marble eventually

Hi. An idea struck me of painting from paint strip: bottom the darker, then above a bit lighter, then the top arched portion lighter again.
Paint your own colors for 'staggered effect' up mantel wall or on swirling wall, idea... fun to be creative!?

Would it ever be seen though - I picture it on high wall, above couch - to catch changing light... or second one has some of your swirl color ya think?

You can paint the brass, however you need a heat resistant paint as you mentioned. You will need to sand or rough up the surface before painting. Get advice from someone experienced at big box or paint store. I love what you did with your island. I am somewhat dismayed you did not put a rectangular counter on it, one at which you could sit a couple of counter stools. Can be done later. Backsplash would be great in a white/greyish type porcelain tile in a subway pattern. You could even switch it up by going end to end, side by side vertical pattern instead of normal running bond. Keep grout lines tight. I'm not sure but do you have a tile surround around the firebox or just on the floor?

Doing the tile on the backsplash or the fireplace is a good starting place for learning to tile. Read up on it though. They could even be coordinated if you want. Same color, different pattern, same pattern, different color. I would prefer same, same. Rooms too close. What you have done with the fireplace surround is very appealing, but I understand the need for outstanding.

I really like the idea of you picking greyish cool tones for your hardwood when you are ready. It seems so many people want dark hardwoods and they are great right after you clean them but need constant upkeep. Shows every speck of dust, lint, etc. You might even consider the new wood grain textured 1 X 3 porcelain tiles in grayish tones & use in floor radiant heat. You will never be sorry.

Go on spectrametal.com, use one of the designer panels to cover fireplace surrounds and use the same on top middle section. You can color rest of the are with dark & light combination of same paint family. The patterns from aluminum will provide different hue of colors based on light conditions.

I love the idea of branches in the fireplace cutouts!!!
Coordinating the fireplace tile/ backsplash with the kitchen backsplash is genius. Really the ideal way to join the two rooms

Fireplace tile is ceramic. On the floor and on wall

that - or just to check that you saw what I intended!! - but very tall branches could be placed flush with the wall/ most of the way up and not actually in the niches [though they could be painted dark, medium, light].... go for it, and please post photos! Inside the niches would probably look more decorated and 'neater'.

if you wanted to mix in traditional wood addition just suggested, with your fun if needed, paint related neutrals in different rectangles....

You can indeed paint the brass doors, but I would suggest using a lacquer thinner first to remove the lacquer and then sanding or using a medium steel wool before appliying the first coat of paint. And that first coat of paint will need to be really thin so that it doesn't flake when heated. Obviously, as previously stated, use high-temps stove paint (thrmalox , Stove Bright as examples)

We'd love to hear how it's going.... even what it looks like now! :)
