Art in girls bedroom

I'm putting together a few rooms in our new home. This is my daughters bedroom. We repainted her furniture, they were given to us free. Solid wood and they used to be a dark mahogany color. I think I have a vision for her bedroom but there are just a few things I have questions on. First question is where to put her small bookshelf? To the left or to the right of the window. I plan to repaint it white like the rest of the room or maybe in a color from her quilt. Second question: my son is holding up a picture frame I plan to use. I have two of them and would stack them one on top of the other. I thought about putting cute pictures of my daughter in them. Would they go best on the right or left of the window?

Okay first thoughts are that you put the bookshelf on the left side of the window and make that a little reading nook but the more I looked at the room. I had thoughts for a different arrangement. I would center her bed on the wall it is currently on and from the looks of it, if there is enough room center her dresser to her bed. The table under the window that I cant see very well use that as another nightstand and flank her bed with them. It might make the room seem so much bigger. it would also be nice if you could find another bookcase for her and put them on both sides of the window and make the window inset as her comfy reading area that can progress over time as she gets older. Use those frames and center them on the walls above where the bookcases would go.

Above her dresser I thought either a mirror or some white pictures like these inspirational photos. If the wooden Aqua pictures frames where on the left of the window is that too close to artwork above the dresser?

Paint bookcase color of frames. Put bookcase next to bed, use like a night stand. Put panels on a Rod, go to ceiling. In a color from bedding, I like that pillow color. Go a cross whole wall. Where window is on each side there are round crystal balls. Used on end on curtain rods. To tuck panels behind. To frame window. Over bed place those frames. With something she loves. What is her interest? Over dresser a mirror sunburst in a bling look. Z Galleries sell. Is there light in ceiling? If so a small crystal chandelier, for a very girly look. This will work for her, in years to come. Have fun.

Wow! Those are darling ideas! I hadn't thought of anything like that. The bay window only comes out 7 inches or so. The other little table was built by her brother when I was working on her furniture so it's special to her. I also have a long oval mirror I could use on a wall for her to have when she plays dress up. Now it's just a matter of figuring out the best way to arrange all that. Any other ideas or possibilities?

Right now the dresser is far enough from the window that it isn't an issue. I like @alleykat1915's suggestion to stack the blue frames above the bookshelf left of the window. However, I keep picturing curtains flanking the window (maybe something to consider down the road). Another option is to lower the blue frames and place on either side of the window. The frames are substantial enough that I don't think they would look sparse. Have you considered placing a bigger lamp on her nightstand? Target has several in blue, white, yellow that would work well.

If you don't want to do panels on window wall. Wallpaper on the wall incl around window. A cute print with colors from bedding. Don't be afraid to mix up patterns. As long as you are in same color tones it's fine. Makes a room interesting. Don't go to baby looking. Pick something she can grow with. On floor on side of bed a small fuzzy white rug. You might think about painting. Furn seems to blend with walls. A color from wall paper or bedding would bring the room to a WOW! Just don't go bold but a very soft shade.

There is a color called Sea Salt which is by BM or SW, would be nice. Get samples n try on your walls first.

What color is the mirror? Definitely hang it! She will love it. Add some wall hooks next to it for dresses. Can you post a picture of the table in front of the window?

Next to dresser window side. Add a 3 ft 2x4 painted white, board. On it screw in Crystal knobs for dresser pulls 4 should work. Hang low so she can hang jewelry or dress up things. Lowes has pulls. Fun to put on her furn too. You can see I like girly rooms.

Paint the mirror, same as frames. But run horizontal and put over bed. Hang approx 10" over headboard. Maybe a padded bench on wall where you are showing mirror. TJMax or even goodwill. Then recover if not a good cover. Very easy to do with a staple gun. Which will turn into your BFF. You could cover in a fuzzy white like rug.

Amy, hi. May I ask how long the bed wall is? If she wants a chair/ pouf/ bean bag is there much room on window wall where your son is?
The suggestion to paint the bookcase is good cause where it's at behind the bed which is pretty and white, etc. it sticks out. I'd think paint it a color and was it Nancy's to place at bedside.. or move it to another wall next to a chair, rug, etc. :)

I would hang the blue pics on either side of the window (slightly lower than where your son is holding it. Paint bookshelf blue and place under frame right of the window. Then I would place a large basket, toy chest or chair under the pic on the left. To the right of the dresser I would install a row of wall pegs (ex. http://www.amazon.com/Spectrum-82200-Seven-Peg-Wood-White/dp/B0002RVMBC - I'm sure you can find cheaper at any hardware or home improvement store). Paint the pegs the same color as the walls so they blend in when empty.

The curtain rod would just be mounted as if it's a straight wall. The panels would then frame the bump out.

Here's an example for the curtains. I would install yours so that the panels hang straight down (no need for tie backs).

The window is or isn't centered on the wall?
I know it's often suggested to 'enlarge' window by extending the rod 8+ inches on each side/ or whole wall. But the bedding is pretty and patterned and draws attention, so using a spring curtain rod would be so easy.... and you already have ideas for art to fill... If the wall at left is wider then that's good, or suggestion for over the bed nice too.

So would the rod attach to the wall above the shutters or in front of the bump out on the walls to the left and right of window? Where would the curtain panels hang?

Also, the long wall of the bed has the closet door that swings open in front of it so I can't put anything up against it that could get bumped. At least that's what I assumed. She's young so maybe when she's older and could be more careful. Maybe it would just always get in the way, I'm not sure I haven't tried anything there. Here is a picture with the closet door open.

If she'd benefit from room-darkening ok, but if not I imagine an ivory eyelet or some fabric that'd show a pretty pattern. Less cost easy to find and replace.

well I am wondering where she sits to read...
did someone suggest trying the wide dresser at foot of bed... that would make room for bookcase and seating [play area]. Just seems crowded at the window... ???

I moved the dresser to the foot of the bed as suggested but it just doesn't feel right. There is plenty of room to walk between the bed and dresser but seems like a lot of open wasted space at the front of the room when you first walk through. It's hard to tell from the picture sorry. Maybe I need to leave it for a few hours to get used to it. I attached the original way too for the third picture.

This is a lot of ruffle, but with one panel, pulled to the left [away from bed] with a pretty tie-back she'd like could be nice.

and an 'empty' area for wall decal of tree or....
your comment about carefulness at closet door - I'd add that even a little child can bump around furniture. If there's a large circular area she'd be freer to move around I'd guess.

I'd actually move the dresser to the left a bit more from the original location so the right of the dresser practically aligns with the left of the bed.

Thank you everyone for all the darling ideas. It's definitely got my head swimming with inspiration. I like the two bookshelves on both walls next to the window but it might take me a month or so before I can get another one. I eventually want to put up some curtains too as many of you have suggested. I think that would really soften up the room. I love the idea of a fur or yellow rug too!! I rearranged the bedroom furniture throughout the day and I think the original set up really works the best. I did end up moving the white table under the window to the corner by the dresser and it helps the window area feel less crowded. So I guess that brings me back to the very first question. Are the Aqua frames ok to put on the left wall of the window stacked one on top of another?

Much of the furniture looks as if it's grouped near the window. I see that your closet doors are quite wide, which takes up quite a bit of floor space in front of them. Still, I would move the bed as close to the closet as possible so that you can have more room near the window, and to take full advantage of the room's size.

You could put the bookshelf or other shallow furniture (large mirror?) on the wall between the bed and the closet. You can purchase a hinge pin door stop that prevents the closet door from opening farther than 90 degrees (or however you set the door stop). They come in plain white and are unobtrusive, and a snap to put on the hinge. You may want want to use one to protect the wall, even if you don't put anything behind it.

If you install curtains, I wouldn't put anything on the window walls (at least not while the other walls are empty). Instead I would hang the blue pics either side by side above the dresser or stacked on top of one another with a larger picture/art centered vertically to the left.

Cute room!! I would put the frames to the left of the window -- stacked -- because the wall is wider. Also, I LOVE etsy for unique, affordable art prints that I can frame myself. Look specifically for children's art; it's so fun!

A quick note about the wall stickers: I let each of my kids pick one out at IKEA because it said they were removable, and when we removed them a year later, they took a lot of the wall paint with them!! I did buy some flowers at Target a long time ago, and those came off well. Just be careful choosing, I guess!

The room looked great from the beginning and other people have made great suggestions. If I may, I would like to mention a very humble, friendly reminder of whose comfort regarding her bedroom arrangement matters most. As mentioned, amyfamy's daughter is quite young whereas her bedroom has clearly been arranged by a cognitively-capable adult with an eye for color. Remember never to take it personally if suddenly one day she decides that a pink & white, symmetrical palace is not part of princess's developing tastes.

Personally, I would avoid choosing photographs for the frames that happen to bizarrely match everything in the rest of the room- in that case the artwork literally blends into the woodwork without being properly appreciated. I get the feeling that there has been some difficulty determining exactly how pronounced each element of the room should be. If the frames must go up, Scotch (the tape company, not the drink or the Scottish Gaeilge people) has created very clever, sturdy yet truly removable soft matte plastic frames that allow the switching out of pictures without photo damage nor the need to first detach the frames from the wall.

You could try switching among photos of your little girl, worldly landscape scenes, nice family tree print ups, her favorite animals, images of deep space captured by the Hubble Telescope, etc., (whatever is deemed most fit. As a very young child, I grew up with an etching of L'Arc Du Triomphe on my wall, which was innocent and seemingly-well-cultured enough for me in my great naivete at the time.)
