Heirloom Roses

Hi, I bought some roses when Heirloom Roses had their sale last weekend. This is the first time I have ordered from them and was wondering about how to plant them. Is it ok to put them all in a large container for now or is that too much room for them or would it be better to put each in a gallon container?

TIA

Karan

Hi, I bought some last week as well, are supposed to be here tomorrow.
They will arrive in band containers, about 3" wide and 5" tall. It is highly advisable to transplant into one gallon containers, using a high quality, well draining potting soil. When they start showing roots out the bottom, step them up to a larger size.
I have lost many roses in the past, thinking I was doing the right thing by using a very large container for a very small rose. A small root can get water-logged in all that wet potting soil, very hard to keep the root system moist without making a bog.
Good luck with your new roses!!

To play it safe, you should probably put them in a gallon container and keep them well watered and after about a week or so use diluted liquid fertilizer on them.

Personally, I ordered a Sharifa Asma and Pretty Jessica from Heirloom and I put them straight into 20" containers. I used Scott's potting soil with some sort of moisture control and mixed about 2 cups of Rose Tone into the soil as I put it in. Mine are both doing perfectly fine and great putting out new growth and doing quite well.

Just make sure you keep them well watered until they get their roots established.

So, what did you buy? Do tell.

I would keep the pots in a shady location, if the sun is hot where you are.

Hi, thank you for the suggestions. They are both helpful. I think I will put them in gallon containers and if we get a really hard freeze I can bring them in the house.
I don't know anything about the roses I ordered only that I thought they were pretty.

They should be here next week. We are having really cool weather from being 105 plus a week or so ago so they won't be stressed from the heat

karan, I am with greybird. I bought a couple of rose bands from Heirloom last winter and some more earlier this year. I planted mine all in five gallon pots. Some of my bands are growing just fine, but some not so much. They grow, then they stop growing completely and after a while they start growing again. The only explanation I have for what is going on is, that I over watered some of my bands and they become water-logged from time to time. Even though I am now aware of that problem, I still don't get the watering right. So when I buy rose bands next time I definitively will put them in one gallon containers first!

By the way the Ambrigde Rose is a great rose!

Mine arrived today and I am thrilled with them. Larger than I expected.

Mine came Thursday in the late afternoon. I was surprised at how big they are. One even has buds. I hope everyone's roses grows well. I have heard and seen from an old tape of Gardener's Diary that Sharifa Asma is a really beautiful rose. I have one tape that shows Martha Stewart making a bouquet of Geoff Hamilton - after I ordered my roses - so that is another that is a maybe some day. The information with the roses said to use SuperThrive and Fish Emulsion so I will get some and use it. I got some compost tea from a Farmer's Market but haven't used it on anything yet. Karan

My four arrived yesterday as well. Nice sized, healthy plants. I will be transplanting them into gallons next week, letting them rest in the shade over the weekend.

I used to be a strict purist, using only organic fertilizer and amendments. As roses are such heavy feeders, I found it to be an impossible feat to try to keep up with their needs while in containers, frequent yellow new growth/sunburned chlorotic foliage. So I cheated and bought some extended release rose food by Miracle Grow. (I hid this away from my husband for a while, didn't want to hear all that ribbing). Anyway, my container roses are beautiful this year for the first time, a dark, healthy green from all those synthetic chemicals. When they go into the ground, I will switch to strictly organic stuff.
