mounding with compost in fall

we usually mound our roses here for winter protection. In the past I have used beauty bark. I am considering using composted steer manure instead this year. I am thinking that it would breakdown over winter and provide fertilizer for the roses next spring. It would also provide a heat source in the winter. Is this a good idea?
