Hi Jeff, great photos! I purchased a "Millie Mac" about a month ago on E-bay, of all places, but it did come from a nursery in south Alabama. It is blooming already. I haven't noticed a fragrance but I will have to check it out now.

i got 'millie mac' at the kiwanis club sale this year.
i was under the impression that it was released by the dodds(of semmes, al.), but don't know that for sure.
it does have the similar fragrance of its parents. i like the more yellow tone of the flowers than the
orange(ish) of the species.

Hey Phillip, did you get your plant from GardenofTreasures? I know the folks who run it, Cheryl and Mike, and their plants are just beautiful. Very professional and courteous. I haven't seen the plants they carry offered anywhere else.

Great pics (I have GOT to get a better digital camera...)!

I visited my neighbor's back yard yesterday and saw a plant just like your Millie Mac. So, of course, touting my extensive garden knowledge, I said, "Oh! Is that a Millie Mac?"

"No, it's a native azalea."

"No it isn't! It's a rhododendron austrinum 'millie mac'".

To prove my point, I went in for a smell-test. No smell. I must have been wrong. We laughed and laughed. Thank goodness.

My 'Millie Mac' didn't bloom this year. :( Several homes in my area have large, old R. austrinum with the typical gold-orange-yellow flowers. I think they are spectacular. I'm guessing there must have been a garden center or an individual who lived in the area who promoted this plant, since these are large, older plants. It seems like most of the selected forms I have purchased are more yellow in color, but I really like the ones with loud orange flowers. I think R. austrinum looks really good planted in combination with evergreen azaleas, none of which have yellow or true orange flowers. I wish they were used more in landscapes!

Hi Nigella, yes that is where it came from. I was very impressed with the size of the plants and the care they took in packaging them. I also found the "Kiromo Shikibu" azalea there and I had been trying to locate it for quite some time.

Does anyone know how large the "Millie Mac" gets?
