Kim ; Did you check the soil temp. you only need 35 F at 4 inches depth at 8:00 a.m. Or as I say way before you could till the soil. [I think they will be fine. Onions are a very hardy plant,] Some like the Egyptian walking survive our -20 F winters with out extra care and my garlic was poking up through the mulch two days after the soil thawed. 20 degree nights has not fazed it at all.

That's what I thought. I thought they'd be fine. But someone who used to farm told me it was too early. So I got worried. When I planted them, it was in the 50s and the soil was completely thawed. Not very cold at all.

Yeah, I think I will continue to cover them as well. I am also growing green onions indoor from seed. When is a good time to set these out? They were started mid Febrary.

cold, frost , freez do not bother onions. The only thing is that
they may not grow untill it gets into 40s. onions sprout in the frig
all the time, where it us about 40F.

Kim; Our problem with weather is not a cold night but a cold snap that can last for a week and will refreeze the ground below the root of the plants damaging the plant when the water expands. Right now we are 100% certainty of frost and that is no problem. If we have a cold snap coming it is best to cover the ground around Onions, Garlic, Tulips etc until the front passes. One way I handle that is to time planting seedlings like you would in the summer a batch every 2-3 weeks starting with longest maturing to shorter maturing. I also do this with leeks.I will be transplanting the first warm day we get now. I do not grow large amounts as I am the only one that uses them except for a few give a ways to old people.Thanks cyrus.Thanks Kim.

Okay. My onion seedlings are just so small right now, so I think I will wait a few more weeks before setting them out. They are starting to stink up the place though!
