store bought onions

I planted 8 of my store bought onions - five below the soil-didn't know how deep to go) and then three with a third of their tops showing above soil. They all had green sprouts to them (they started in the food bin). So far all have grown very fat and tall. So now I am wondering - are they going to give me onions or escallions? The ones above the soil, with they give onions and when, and the others far below, what.

All of this I did bz I was told I wd just get escallions, but I am hoping inside that I will get onions.

My neighbour planted with tips showing, 2 store bought and reaped five fat onions bunched together in a container.

Any advice?

This would be what I'd call a "gardening experiment". If your conditions are exactly like your neighbor's, same variety of onion, same planting time, same planting coditions, then good chance you'd have the same results. Otherwise, who knows? (I have not tried this experiment before. So I'd be interested in your results.)

The onion that you plant is not the same onion you will harvest. It is like planting an onion set. The new onion will form inside the mother onion which will turn to mush. You may end up with 3 or 4 baby onions. You may also leave them in the ground over winter and harvest nice crisp green onions next spring. Planting onion plants is an altogether different thing.
