What I mean is whether you can save cloves for planting from a head you've already broken into for eating.

Here's the situation. First time grower here. I went to a garlic festival last Fall and got nine different hardnecks and planted them. I had a notebook with charts showing where everything was in the garden. Every row was different. One of my little darling children made off with my notebook last winter. On top of that, my drying racks got knocked over while I was gone and they "helped" by putting everything back. All mixed up of course. Now nothing is even separated into like groups.

Now there is one kind of garlic my wife and I really love for salad making over all the others. It's obviously some kind of rocambole, but I have three or four types of that. So when we break into a certain head and find, "that's it!", can we save those remaining cloves for planting at the end of October, or will they go bad by then from being opened up?

If so, then I will just save all the rocambole types until October and then we'll have a salad eating marathon. I would really rather not do that.
