smoke tree growth rate

i have a smoke tree that was a transplanted seedling from a seed from my mature tree. last year i could measure it's growth on a daily basis. about 3 feet off the ground it formed 3 trunks. it grew near 5 ft. last year.

this year i believe 2 of the 3 trunks were stunted by cicada damage from this springs mass invasion. the 3rd trunk grew 6 ft this season which makes for a pretty uneven looking tree. but while it has has grown rapidly skyward it has not developed much girth & all 3 trunks are pretty spindly. if i prune back the taller trunk & tweak the other 2 besides spreading out more do you think it would gain some girth? i would prefer it to be a tree not a shrub. this1st pruning should not change it into a shrub. future prunings could.
