kevip7, That happens to my Yellow Groove aureocaulis each year. It puts up more shoots than it can support and then aborts some of them. It seems more prevalent on that species than on my decora or nuda, but I have seen it happen on all three. I would not worry too much about it. The rest of the plant goes on, looking healthy as if nothing out of the ordinary has happened. Enjoy the 12 that made it. My aureocaulis is just now starting to shoot, nothing over 3 inches tall so far. If this thread is still active in a month, I'll let you know how many mine aborts. Eric

My p.dulcis aborted about 3 or 4 only. Was a bit worried it was so many on the other plant.

can that happen to moso too. My moso did that this year, i didnt know if it was a late frost or what

Yes, it sounds like it aborted what it could not support. Bamboo also needs lots of water when shooting, so this could have affected the emerging shoots.

Well, it's been a month and this is what is going on in my small (3' x 16') patch of Ph. a. aureocaulis. There are 73 new culms ranging from 5' to 10'. The largest ones have about 1/2" diameter and are still growing. I found 39 aborted culms. These were all less than 6" tall. They just dried up. There are still about 10 very short shoots poking up out of the gound, but I doubt any of these will grow. This is the typical experience I have seen with this species.

I just rechecked the height of the bamboo on my previous post. 3" to 10' in four weeks! Ain't bamboo amazing! Eric

Last year my flexuosa aborted a good 50 out of 150. this year I bet I have closer to 175 and no sign yet of any major aborting. When these finally start to leaf out it's bye bye neighbors ;-)

I'd say 1 in 5 abort in my yellowgroove.
Used to concern me, not any more.
