Partly it depends on what kind of pruning you are planning to do. Take the hibiscus, for instance. If you are going to snip out some small side branches that are raking a window, that could be done any time. If, on the other hand you are planning to cut all of it down low to start it over or maintain it as a shorter shrub then you would do that at end of winter.

If you feel like getting outside and doing some pruning this winter, you should be fine doing the trees.

i think you have to be careful with the reach as cutting in winter risks infection by a certain disease. I can't remember the name of it but i was warned against pruning my plum after september as its more prone to the disease at this time of year.
