Tell me about La Paz...

Hello everybody! I am interested in La Paz but would like to have more info about it. Performance? Flower Size/Count? Growth habit? Likes and dislikes? It is a little bit expensive but I want to give it a shot. This will be my first cybister if ever. Thank you so much!

    Hi Maria,
Here is a real life photo.

    {{gwi:384262}}

This was my first year with La Paz. The bulb took a little longer to root but it may have wanted a bit more heat than I had. It gave 3 good scapes with plenty of flowers. It appears to be a good, healthy cultivar. I did note that it dropped every attempt at pollinating but the pollen set very well on Ruby Meyer.
While I like it for it's vigor,I prefer the more clear red of Ruby Meyer, just personal preference. Would you think of trading? Lora

OMG, OMG, my Lora is back!!! Geeezzzzz, how have you been doing? I've been all over the garden centers around here and always thought about how busy you could be too. Been holding myself back from emailing you so not to bother you. I kinda knew you would be the first person to repond to this post. Yes Ruby Meyer has a more distinct red but I can't find it anywhere at this season. I would love to trade but don't have much variety...you practically have everything silly! Please email me...

Ive got La Paz, bought a couple of bulbs last year, no flowers last year. Both have flowered this year. Flowers look a bit like Reggae, but have just noticed the flowers are a darker red, almost scarlet. Not bad, not my favourite though. The colour is a bit darker than Ruby Meyer, Ive had 10 bulbs of Ruby meyer flower in sucession this year, fantastsic clear colour.
La paz is a bit slow to root, getting a bit worried at the moment, plenty of pollen though, might try and get some seeds.
Crossed Emerald and Ruby Meyer earlier in the year, 3 nice big seed pods have survived.

Hello hairy3, nice to hear from you. Thanks a lot for your input. I really do appreciate it. Like what Lora said, La Paz is slow to root and did not pollinate...'finicky' I guess...lol. Seems to me like it's not a very good candidate for my FIRST Cybister. Ohhhh...but I want one so much!
10 Ruby Meyer flowering in succession...WOW!

    Hello mariava7,
Dont be put off my the 'difficulty' of Cybisters. Some seem slow to root when they are flowering, but most of mine seem to produce masses of roots after they have finished flowering. After that they are fairly easy going.I didnt even have to give them a cold period to encourage them to flower, they just all came into flower round about the same time. If you want a fairly easy variety to try, Tango is probably the easiest, not a fantastic colour combination, but looks pretty similar to la Paz and Reggae. Another fairly easy one with a much better colour is Merengue, this is one of my favourites so Im biased. Merengue produced 4 scapes per bulb this year, with 4 flowers per scape!!
So dont give up on cybisters just yet

Thank you so much for the infos and encouragement Hairy3. Oh I won't give up...it's just not me. I really would like to try these Cybisters but most of the bulb suppliers I know just don't have them available anymore at this season. B&B though has La Paz available that's why I'm asking about it. Where do you get your Cybisters?

Okkkkkk...B&B has their bulbs on sale for 50% off and I went and got La Paz for $7 each. Wish me luck!!!

Presenting my first cybister La Paz...
    {{gwi:409179}}
...putting out 2 scapes with coral red and broad light green stripes on it's lower petals. Geezzzz, I have never seen so tall of a scape. One was 19 inches and the other one is 21 inches.
Very different but nice...will have to get other varieties.

WOW - congratulations, that was a great deal
This is a very nice presentation of "La Paz"
Will you self pollinate some blooms?

Hello Hans and thank you. I just now finished tinkering on La Paz. First 2 blooms were ready to be pollinated and of course I started with papilio pollen. The next two blooms will self pollinate it when they are ready. La Paz if I am right does not have much pollen...I collected quite a few though.

    Hi Maria,
Good Job! I think you are going to like this one a lot.It is far surpassing Ruby Meyer & Emerald in growth,a full 11 leaves! The bulb is quite a bit larger than I thought Cybisters got. No signs of offsets yet but I'm quite happy with it's growth considering it's just the end of June.
I'm taking the afternoon off to work on my hippis :) I have a big tub of coir soaking & the youngest son is going to help repot.
(all is still chaos here, the greenhouse had to be dissambeled & it's neatly wrapped in tarps. The plaster upstairs collapsed when the roofers were working, the french drain was crushed by a delivery truck-it's beyond a comedy of errors right now :o Please -do- drop me a line,I assure you it would be a bright spot in my day :) Lora

Oh, Paxfleur! Excellent photographs! You really captured the coloring and shape so well!

This is my La Paz... I want to bring it back so I can compare it with yours...

    La Paz?
    {{gwi:409184}}

After searching my photo records, I find that La Paz only gave me one scape! I wonder at that... all other bulbs have given at least 2, some 3...

Yours is really quite a looker, Paxfleur!

And up to this day, that La Paz that I bought almost 2 years ago still remains as one of my favorites. :-)

Take good care of your lovely La Paz(s) for it will give you back so much joy. Mine bloomed 3 times last year. Very careful watering is a "must" at this stage of the bulb. A lot of cybister growers recomend to not water at all until leaves start to grow.

    Happy cybister growing to all!!!

I bought La Paz from Van Engelen last year...my first with Amies. I liked it a lot, had at least 2 stalks and maybe 3, seems like we used a lot of flowers off it. It was not as popular with our customers though I thought it far more exotic! The bulb survived but probably will not bloom this year. None of last years are blooming for me this year but I have quite a forest of them I am trying to nurture. IT was the only one to retain its origonal tag! I am trying to fatten it up for next year..or sooner if it wants! Time will tell. I bought Ruby Meyer this year and it has a bud just starting to grow upwards.

Jodi - Thank you for your compliments! =) I very much so enjoy seeing your jungle of greenery and so glad I posted something to your liking. Your "La Paz" looks like "La Paz" to me but don't quote me on that because I know very little about cybisters as of yet! We also have to take into consideration that we have different growing enviroments and conditions, for instance, La Paz sat on my dinner table with long, fully-developed scapes for two weeks before I actually saw some coloring in the buds. Neveretheless, your La Paz is beautiful! =)

Maria - Much of my newly acquired bulbs this season were highly influenced by your pictures and collection, including La Paz. I recalled you singing the praises of La Paz and was so convinced that it would have to be my first cybister and I thank you for your recommendations. =)

Liza - My mother and sister don't like "La Paz" as well because they think it's too exotic, too small. My mother said, "bigger is better" and therefore is favoring the likes of Candy Floss, Elvas, Lemon & Lime, etc....I would have to disagree with her though, I think I will be enjoying many more cybisters in the future. I can however, understand why your customers might not have fancied it as much as it is very different from the usual amaryllis we are used to. =)

Thank you all for your compliments and Hippi Amaryllis Growing! =) I hope that many of the "anonymous" viewers of our forum will also view these pictures of these particular varieties and be influenced to acquire them and add them to their collection as well.....we are in a sense, passing the torch and spreading praises/pictures of what will one day inspire others to grow these magnificent varieties.

Jodi, I am more than convinced that you have Emerald.

I think so, too, Soultan... after re-posting it to compare with Paxfleur's photos, I see a huge difference in the coloration... too huge to be just from lighting and other environmental influences... even the way mine holds its petals is different...

Even so, I like Emerald as well as La Paz, so it's not a disappointment at all! I just need to get a La Paz now! A legitimate excuse to collect another bulb... imagine that!

I'm really glad you posted such wonderfully clear, focused pictures of La Paz, Paxfleur... and the lighting is perfect! Great photography! Something about how you focused on the farther scape makes La Paz seem so delicate and... what's the word I'm looking for? The right word escapes me at the moment... but they're great shots of a beautiful flower!

LaPaz is so playful! I am begining to like the Cybisters even more lately. Some are so very interesting and their flowers are usually quite generous.

Since I really want them more for breeding, I prefer the singles, but Residence is a real looker! I don't know... I may have to get that one! Chico and Bogota also really pique my interest... more must haves! Does it ever end?!

Is it just my La Paz or just it's characteristics that the flowers don't last as long? One of my La Paz flowers already has started to wilt and it has only been 5 days. Is this the norm for cybisters? =)

I'm not really sure... I think mine fade fast for a couple of reasons... I pollinate them, and the temperature in my apartment fluctuates quite a bit... plus, I don't move them out of the light of the window, and I know it helps to keep them in a cool room out of sunlight to prolong bloom time.

Jodi, I was told to pollinate right when the flowers started to fade to prolong the flowers......I don't think it's sunlight because all my blooming scapes are placed on the dining table and stay there untill they finish blooming.....It might be the temperature though, Virginia weather has been so crazy going from cold to very warm. =)

I've gotten in the habit of enjoying my flowers for a few days, and then soon after the stigma turns up signaling it is receptive to pollen, I breed. I have tried waiting until the flowers are on the verge of fading before pollinating, but have had little success waiting so long...

I don't mind if I shorten the life of my flowers by a day or two... I have a lot of flowers! Once I have watched them open, photographed them, and stared at them for a few days and pollinated, it's ok to let them fade... they'll be back next year! :-)

Lovely flowers! Thank you for sharing!

I hope my La Paz will bloom this spring for me... it's napping right now.

Npublici..."B&B" is Brent & Becky's bulbs here in Virginia. The earlier posts were from May 2006 by the way. B&B does not do this 50-75% off their website anymore. They do in their warehouse at the end of the season. Although I live in Virginia, B&B is still like 8-9 hours drive for me..lol!!! They used to have decent bulbs. I bought my very first Papilio, La Paz, Green Goddess, Blossom Peacock, Baby Star and Pamela from them and they were really nice bulbs that performed good. The quality of their bulbs are not as good now as reported by some members. They must have changed their bulb supplier or something.

Just resurrecting an old thread from way back in 2006. My very first cybister was La Paz. Way back then, the only available cybisters offered here in US by USA bulb suppliers were only La Paz, Emerald and Ruby Meyer. We really are spoiled now.

I remember talking that pic of my La Paz with our first digital camera that stores images in floppy disks! Haha!

    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?><md>Dearest Maria....Hi!!!

After reviewing all those lovely pictures I am still baffled! Many if not all of them (some you couldn't see) have the noticeably tan pedicels which I have always associated with Tango.

    Donna

    Donna,
I have been discussing the tan pedicels with several people all around the world. It could be the result of a "sport", which is a spontaneous mutation. It seems that the blooms are unaffected, but there is this odd coloration to the pedicels.

I still like Hans-Werner's suggestion of H. LaPango for the blooms with tan pedicels! I do believe, after seeing photos from Germany, The Netherlands, and Virginia, that H. Tango is much redder and has only stripes of green.

Here all these years I've wanted a LaPaz, and likely I had one; what I've been missing is a Tango!
    ;-)

Kristi, that very first La Paz of mine has already gone to Hippie Heaven and up to this day cannot find a La Paz that looks like it. Take note that that La Paz was the stock released in Fall 2005. And yes Donna, it has tan pedicels.

Paxfleur's La Paz is from stock of Fall 2007.
Yanooshek's La Paz if from stock of Fall 2008 (?).
Both are kinda different already from the stock of Fall 2005 having thinner petals.

I am thinking that the grower could have changed their La Paz stock to a different one that is more vigorous and better for the flower market perhaps? Or something could have happened to the very original La Paz stock (virus?) that the growers had to dump em from production? The replacement stock could be a seedling or sister of La Paz or an unnamed stock they had then. I have also read that cuttage and invitro propagation does not give out 100% (DNA wise anyway)identical results. It could also be possible that these La Paz stock now is actually La Paz that is just different from the very original one. Who knows? Just my 2 cents...

Orrrrr these guys could very well be pulling our legs all these years. Ughhhhh!

Take a look at this picture I have saved in my picture files. This is a large shipment of bulbs to Taiwan direct from Ludwig(?) the producer of these bulbs before company sold out. These bulbs are from stock of 2008/2009 which were labeled as Tango. The very same stock that they sell as La Paz?

I'm done with this quest of mine to find a true or very original La Paz. It's useless I think. Life goes on with LaPangos...

Oh Maria!!! Maybe the green pedicel is the "sport"! I am laughing aloud at work!! I love it!!
    (beautiful photo BTW!)

Attaching another photo from KAVB to show the "H. Tango" that they registered; photo is from the registry file. Of course, these are the best of the best blooms, but there is noticeably less green on the petals.

Maria, You may have hit the nail on the head with your suggestion of micropropagation being the culprit and not always giving out exact clones. I know for a fact that rhododendrons and kalmia produced through tissue culture can often result in drastically different outcomes. Sometimes, particularily with kalmia, the aberrant tissue culture seedlings are pleasingly different enough to warrant further propagation but it's not usually the whole batch, just select seedlings that are different. With rhododendrons the whole batch is usually slightly inferior and folks who end up with them don't realize until years later that their plant looks "different" than others.

At any rate, I don't think anyone will be buying a Tango or "La Paz" without tan pedicles in the near future unless they hit the jackpot.

Just an observation on my part, which may or not be correct, but I think from viewing past pictures of Rosario with graceful sweeping petals that these new Rosarios (although they are gorgeous and I'm thrilled to have them ;-)),
aren't quite as graceful as the ones produced years ago. Just my opinion of course...Donna

What color are the pedicels? We're taking a survey (!).

    Good Morning Georges,

If you could please sent us picture of the pedicels, as Kristi says we are all interested in pedicel colors in this debate over La Paz verses Tango and is this a new bulb purchased this year from Royal Colors or is it several years old. Thanks, Donna

    sorry, another duplicate..

My La Paz is new for me I bought it in october 2014 from Royal Colors. The pedicel is about 16 mm long and 0.63 inch. The Tango is going to flower soon. The Kalhua is a bit strange for me.

    As follow..........

    The end

Thanks for showing us a picture of your La Paz's pedicels. They appear to be tan rather than green so "I" think you have a Tango and not a La Paz. It will be very interesting to see how your Tango differs from your La Paz when it blooms, be sure to send pictures of both the flowers and the pedicels!

I can't wait to see what you received for Kahlua, there are several different mislabels, all quite pretty that many of us including myself got instead of the real Kahlua. Your "Kahlua" scapes and buds don't look like a cybister to me, hmmm.☺☺

    Donna

If the original La Paz was changed for reasons of performance, they seem to have picked a winner. I received a 29 cm bulb this year, and it produced 4 scapes which opened sequentially to give nearly continuous blooms for 5 weeks.

I think that the tan pedicles somehow have been "introduced" into H. La Paz as it appears from photos posted by Maria, Fishingdentist, and KAVB that the blooms of H.Tango are much more red with much less green. My Tango scape and bud are much more red, whereas those of H. La Paz were more pink.

For a long while, because of the pedicel color, many of us (myself very included) thought that the 2 hybrids had very similar blooms with the tan pedicles being a differentiating feature, and erroneously credited to H. Tango. Perhaps we should be posting photos of more H. Tango blooms to reveal the real differences in the customers' hands.

I am no longer convinced that they are nearly identical.
