planting bamboo

I have 3 types of bamboo and they're still in the pots. Arrow, Golden, and Black. Any special precautions so these don't take over the neighborhood!!??

Do a web search for "root barrier" or "bamboo barrier". You have to put in something pretty serious, if a running bamboo decides to take off it can be amazing how far away it comes up and how much of it comes up.

Yes...two magic words: rhizome prune. Take a sharp shovel and chop down about a foot all along the perimeter you want to maintain in the early fall and maybe again in the late fall. This will take care of any escapees. Much less work than root barrier.

    Kudzu,
Where do you get your bamboo in Washington? I am in Puyallup area and buy from a place in Monroe.

    Madake-
I get most of it from Marc Hilt at Bambu-u.com. He's up in Chimacum (near Pt. Townsend), so sometimes I drive and sometimes I just order by mail. I also can recommend Clinton Bamboo Growers in Burien (no web site, but worth the trip...they also have a lot of nice grasses, etc.), and Boxhill Farm Nursery in Duvall which has a large selection and good prices. I've also heard good things about Jade Mountain Bamboo Nursery in Tacoma, but have never been there. I also just visited Phil Comer over in Shelton (he posts in this forum as PHILinShelton), and he has a lot of very nice and healthy plants.

By the way, what's the place in Monroe?

Where at in Burien. I'm an old Highline boy. I'd like to check out Clinton Bamboo.

    lanternboy-
Clinton Bamboo (it's actually Clinton, Inc. Bamboo Growers) is at 12260 1st Ave S. Look for the house on the east side of the road where you can see bamboo growing (there's only a tiny sign on the lawn, and you have to park on the shoulder of the road). It looks small, but they have a lot of land in back of the house. Make sure you call them first: they're open several days a week and other days by appointment, but I don't know what their summer schedule is. The phone number is 206-242-8848. I always enjoy visiting. They're very knowledgeable about what they sell and are generous with their time in answering questions. Don't miss their huge grove of Vivax...the biggest culms I've seen in the Seattle area.
If you go, let me know what you think.

    Thanks!
I have been to boxhill but not Clinton (although I would like to go sometime if my schedule permits it. I don't get out to Shelton or Chimacum very often, but again if my schedule ever permits it).
    In Monroe I stop by:
    Anderson's Bambooland
    Ronald Anderson
    (360) 794-3804
    22114 State Route 2, Monroe, WA 98272
-its on the way to steven's pass just on the other side of Monroe...watch for the bamboo on the right as the turn comes up with little notice (except for all the bamboo in fields that you drive by).
I have been to Jade Mountain and found that they have a good number of boo on display, although maybe not as many as boxhill (the owner was very informative to me as I was just getting into boo).

Todd's nursury in Orting/sumner also has a mature grove of either Vivax or Madake on display.

Are you going the the grove cleanup at the WSU Research center in Puyallup on Saturday?

I didn't know it was going on... what time? I am helping a friend move in the morning.

    Madake
The cleanup is from 10:00 till 3:00.
The address is 612 Pioneer Way East , Puyallup, WA

The groves are north of Pioneer Way on a dirt road.

The have duplicated plots of bambusoides, henon, nuda, rubro, golden, vivax, and yellow groove and we will be thinning a plot of each.

I'll try to get permission from my wife... sounds like fun... well hard work fun. If I can make it do they want you to bring tools to help out, or will they provide them?
    Kevin.

    Kevin
They are requesting that we bring our own tools although I am sure there will be some extra tools there and someone will need to carry the cut canes out of the plots.

Of course the talking with others about bamboo and such is the best part.

Can anybody stop by??? Sounds interesting.

Sigh, I wish I could have... My wife had a hair cut that day and I just couldn't convince her that my going to cut bamboo was more important :) When's the next event so I can plan ahead?

I will start a new thread with some photos of the Puyallup grove cleanup.
