Hi TF! Heres a list of what I have out on the deck and in the ground here in NC too. When it begins to get cold... 45 degrees... thick mulch seems to work for me (4-6 inches) If it freezes where you are... you may loose leaves and possibly top kill, meaning the tips of the bamboo suffer first and may die off... no worries, each season they will come back bigger and stronger to the point where you will see no signs of winter damage. Heres my list. I have been collecting for a little over 2 years now. So by no means am I claiming to know it all :-D just whats working for me in NC :-D.

Bambusa Vulgaris Vittata- Yellow Rod (clumper) in planter for now, but will be in the ground soon.
Bambusa Tuldoidws Ventricosas- Baby buddha (clumper) in planters and 2 large plants in ground too.
Yushania Anceps- pitt White (runner) in 2 10 gallon planters.
Fargesia Nitida- Blue Fountain (clumper) in 10 gallon planter, nice tight clumper, plan to make a division so that I can place half in the ground too.
Phyllostachys Virdis- Robert Young (runner) in ground, great bright yellow culms w/deep green leaves. Been in ground 7 months, hoping to see new growth soon.
Pseudosasa Japonica- Aarow (runner) in 10 gallon planter
Indocallamus Tessalatus- Giant Leaf (runner) I think? but not running for me :( in 10 gallon planter
Phyllostachys Flexuosa- Drooping or Zig Zag (runner) in 15 gallon planter but grows like a clumper for me so far. Hibanobambusa Tranquilans- Shiroshima (runner) in ground for 8 months. I love the yellow/green 2-tone leaves. Not a fast runner so far...lots of new growth, but tight clumper like appearence.
Phyllostachys Heterocycla F. pubescens- MOSO (runner)I have several plants. 10 gallon planter w/ second year seedlings, 3 rd year plant in the ground not running much at all...yet! :-D
I have just started some seeds too:
Water Bamboo- Phyllostachys heteroclada- planted 20 and 18 sprouted ;-D
F. Nitida Gansu- no signs of life yet...but they are only a week into sowing.
Chusquea sulcata- same
Bambusa Bambos- Thorny- same

Take care and choose carefully... so many Boos to choose from :-D

hi cj,
thanks for the info. are there any places for mail order you could recommend??
cliff in florida

The exchange section here has many Bamboo'ers willing to trade and sell. I believe there is a "source" entry in the exchange forum too. Someone will surely chime in with more details.
Take care
