Neo. seed pods?

Hi all,

My Neo.'Hannibal Lecter' blossomed about a month ago,and instead of the usual appearance of the cup on its way toward decay,it seems to look very healthy and somewhat colorful.(see pics) The flower overies have a full bulbous look, and are a bright white with green tops.

I'm not a hybridizer, and have done nothing to cause a pollenation to take place, yet this plant looks like it may have ripening seed pods, and a lot of them.I've had flying insects around the plants at times, and a spider kept building its web over the cup, so perhaps that may have done it.

So I'm asking for some advice to verify if the plant is pregnant, and what to do and when to do it time wise,to obtain seeds for propagating a bunch of seedlings.

Thanks for any advice you may have,as this is a new area for me.Seeds from Dyckia, etc, are easy, they just fall out of the pod,but neo's...?

Bob

Yup, Bob, you've got seeds! Hannibal must be a self-pollinator. S-Ps don't need any outside help, just the proximity of the floral parts is enough to do the trick. If it was insect pollination they wouldn't ALL be ripening, just random ones.

Neo seeds usually take somewhere in the vicinity of 3 months to ripen, but you can test them periodically by gently tugging at the berries. When they're ready they should pull free fairly easily. I just squeeze them out evenly over the surface of a pot of moist, tightly-packed sphagnum moss and then put some kind of clear lid over it and make sure it stays moist. The rest is pretty much the same drill as with Dyckias.

It's funny, I thought I'd had at least one Hannibal bloom, but I never got any seeds from it. A friend gave me a packet of Hannibal Lecter F2 seeds though, so it must be a selfer. Maybe I just imagined that mine bloomed.....

    Thanks Lisa,
Good news that I'm a 'dad' again...its been awhile. :)
When these pods are ripe, and there are around 30,I dont't think I'll try germinating all of them,so if anyone out there would want a pod or two, just e-mail me and I will mail it to you. 'Hannibal' likes to meet new people...just like in the movie ;)

Will you be throwing in some fava beans and a nice chianti, Bob?

The F2s should have a mixed bag of traits right? It would be nice to see a group planted out with slight differences amoung them. Then again, I'm sure you can end up with some plants looking pretty different.

    Hi everyone,
I've sent out seeds from H.L. to four GW friends yesterday, and have many seed pods left.
So if anyone else wants to try and raise some Hannibal's,
just drop me a note via my e-mail address,[see'my page'].
I also have fresh seeds for Fosterella spectabilis if interested.

    Hi all,
Seems that I'm having an occasionl problem with my e-mail via GW,or something else, since I'm now using the new
Windows Live Hotmail Beta account. For example, HDD's mail was in my junk mail box,and I did not receive Any mail from bambi too(as yet).
This new Mail setup filters out any New Unrecognized addresses as junk mail, and I must decide to read them or delete.
If anyone mails me about the seeds,be sure to add in the Subject: SEEDS.
So, unless I'm expecting new mail, like for these seeds, there is a chance it may not get read. If you try,and I don't answer, try again.
Hope I did'nt confuse you,but I want to see these seeds get to new homes and not be wasted. Hannibal Lector would not be happy with me,and you know how he thinks ;(
You can email me direct, use b740c@msn.com
    Bob
