Another surprise from Lowes

So I went to the Lowes up in north Houston, of I-45 and was going to paw through the boxes of Susan. When I got there, I was a tad disappointed. All the Susan boxes had been opened, and worse...there were only a few left.

The first one I opened immediately made that frown turn upside down. I was hoping for a Donau, but what greeted me was a very sad, salmon double. I pulled it out and saw that the scape was nearly U-shaped, and that the flowers were fully opened (and crumpled). Luckily there was another scape.

I walked to the customer service counter and asked if, since this bulb had already bloomed and "was no good anymore", if they would give me a deal on it. She said, "yes". I went back and found another slightly lighter colored bloom/bulb in similar condition and then a bulb that had leaves, but no scape.

I walked out the door after paying $10 for the 3 bulbs..$5.98 for the one with leaves and $2 each for the blooming bulbs. I've potted them up and put them where they'll get some sun and warmth.

I am thinking they may be Lady Jane!

:-) Happy bulb shopping!

Kristi

I had to be one of the first to pick thru the Lowes boxes back in October. Silly me thought I'd wait until they bloomed to label them. The first ones to bloom were Star of Holland and Susan....NOT!

....another one bites the dust!!! Lust is one of the 7 deadly sins ain't it? Oh wait, it does not apply to Amaryllis, fortunately. AJ I can assure you, you will enjoy LadyJane!!

Lucky for me, I have 3 huge Lady Janes (through mislabels) but one of them I just had to preform surgery on for the miserable NBF..an epidemic in my yard this year. Since this particular Lady Jane is a huge bulb, I'm hoping she will survive. She is just one of the most beautiful doubles I think, with her pink to peach blooms, what's not to love! The only drawback if you can call it a drawback is that she only opens 2 of her 4 flowers at a time, but since the flowers are so huge, it gives you all that more time to enjoy her...!!

hmmmm Kristi-coffeemom's "Lady" doesn't seem to have the frilly edges the others have....could it be something else??? It is really pretty, Maybe a "Lord-Jane"??

    Alana,

I love how your bulbs bloom with so many leaves, it makes the overall effect much better ;)

Cindee, I was thinking the same thing about Coffeemon's Lady Jane, but I didn't want to be the one to point it out...there is a variety called Double Queen that looks similar to Lady Jane but doesn't appear to be as large or frilly, I've seen it on Ebay. Does anyone have a Double Queen picture for a comparison..? Maybe it's just because the bulbs were stressed and next time the frills will come in... Just a thought....but now that I look at the picture again, I do see some frills towards the center, so maybe it's just stress.

Gee, Donna, I'm the opposite! I get MORE frilly when I'm stressed...ha ha Will have to check out Double Queen.

I was thinking it was the stressed thing too. Time will tell I guess - though I had never heard of Double Queen.

Thanks Josh, I like them with green leaves too, so I plant some younger bulblets in there. If I could just figure out how to get the blooms to be the same height I'd be all set!

You made me run out and look. Well she frilly-ed up. The first pic was when she first opened. I guess she wasn't ready for her close up.

The first "Susan" I bought bloomed yesterday, it was in the $5.98 boxes. It is Lady Jane woo-hoo!

Hey Guys, I was at Lowes today and they moved the rack of misguided amaryllis to the back! I stole pollen...is that illegal?? Anyway, they had 2 of these Deep Red blooms winding out of boxes, their back petals were white splashed with greed mid ribs, but center flowers were deep red to like red/black throats. They were so stressed, poor babies. They were in Red Lion boxes, but next to the other pathetic orangey/red Lions, they were definately NOT RLs...so ok I stole pollen!! lol Wonder what they are...I was on another mission so I didn't barter or try to get an Ami deal, I just stole pollen!

Oooh, I wonder what they were...do you think they could have been Gilmar? You say they were in Red Lion boxes? I don't know if our Lowe's hippies are as far along as they are in in Florida, but of course you have air-conditioning..I'll have to make a trip to our Lowe's soon...
