Garden Guests?

A long time ago there was a thread about the different wildlife that wandered into gardens and greenhouses. There was even one of a coyote that was just lounging in the greenhouse like he owned it. I've only had the usual, but we did have an eastern milksnake in the yard and I went after it because it looked like a coral snake (neighborhood is full of kids). We have a large pond as a water feature for my development and idiots drop off exotics they no longer want and I guess they think the pond is a good habitat. We get desert tortoises alot and bring them to a rescue place.

Has anyone had any unusual wildlife surprise them in the gardens, greenhouse or even in the house?

Denise

I get birds in the house alot, they go right to the plants.

I loved watching these guys grow.

The hawks are finally returning to this area.

This same frog kept getting into my plants, I would move him way out into my neighbors yard and the next day he was back! I think he had a death wish.

Nice pictures. The "frog" you pictured is actually toad. Speaking of frogs, I find about 8-10 tree frogs in my house every summer. No idea how they get in.

    Denise,

The only snakes we have here are garters (across the river are the rattlers, where it's hotter) and they almost always surprise me when I'm stepping down or up on the stairs or hill - either way, they don't stick around for a picture, but I'll try extra hard this year.

This is what comes through the yard at various times.

The American black bear - they come in all colours, too.

In the suburbs, all I get is hummingbirds nesting in my bushes and various insects. A coyote wanders by, but stays out of the backyard. The usual suburb inhabitants, a squirrel and the local rat, possum, skunk. The rat keeps the snails out of the garden and is actually a rather nice neighbor inspite of his bad reputation. I miss living where there is a lot of wildlife, but I don't miss the snakes!

This is the wildest thing in my garden.

Great pictures, marquest! I especially like the cardinal and the turkeys. Are the turkeys friendly? I saw wild turkeys from time to time while growing up in Nebraska, and I know that they can sometimes be aggressive.

No pictures, but we have squirrels, lots of birds, deer, and lately the neighbors 5 Rhode Island Red hens. I wouldn't really mind the chickens, if they would just scratch in the places I want them too. The deer seem to love cantaloupe and musk melon, they ate more than we did last summer.

Jacob they ignore me as long as I do not move fast when I walk up on them. They are not friendly they just ignore me and continue to eat.

Denise, I have never heard of Turkey Buzzards. lol. I have had as many as 50-60 turkeys in my yard at one time all different sizes. I am on 4 acres of land but I live in a suburban area some house are close some have a good bit of land around them. They seem to like my yard. But you will not see one Turkey from late Oct until Jan. I think they know they could be dinner.

Marquest - They are sometime called turkey vultures and seem to only eat carion, so they serve a purpose. I've only seen the black headed type in the air, they're gorgeous in flight. One nasty fact is they vomit the entire contents of their stomaches when startled so they are also called puke-birds. Nice huh?

Thank you Denise, shows what a 'burb girl I am. lol That is interesting. I am just finding out what half the critters are in my yard. Living in the suburbs all my life I never saw anything bigger than a rabbit in my area.

wantonamara, that is a beautiful shot of the turkeys.

I'm with Marquest - grew up in the burbs, now I'm out in the country. Hubby doesn't get it when I get fascinated by x animal. I really could have done without spider pictures lol :::shudders:::
