sorry about the having to copy and paste the links.

Sorry I am the only one responding to this post. I have a guess now that I have Pachycereus pringlei. I am concerned about the extensive root damage here. Anybody have advice on how to deal with that? I have it indoors now drying out. Should I make clean cuts on the roots or let them be?

Perhaps it will help to have the pictures here instead of having to copy and paste. You can use the IMG SRC= encased in the pointy brackets, with the link inside double quotes, to show the pictures here. Hope that helps.

well the first one worked, but the others didn't... :(

Looks like Stenocereus thurberi - Organ Pipe cactus to me.

Thanks for the response. I looked at cactiguide.com and some of the pics that show juveniles look right on the money to be the organ pipe cactus (for as much as you can tell from a picture like that) but if you look at pics of Pachycereus pringlei from the same site, the tapered shape in the Grigsby Cactus Gardens pics is pronounced like the one I have. What do you think?

(http://cactiguide.com/graphics/p_pringlei_a_600.jpg)

Which looks more like yours?
This one (P. pringlei)....
{{gwi:521387}}

Or This one (S. thurberi)?

{{gwi:521389}}

Look at the areoles... P. pringlei a light brown/beige...looks more white or grey.
S. thurberi is a dark brownish turning black.
The S. thurberi doesn't get as thick as P. pringlei either. Two to 8 inches in diameter vs. 8-12" in diameter for P. pringlei. Spine lengths vary so that is not always a good indicator and both have about the same number of spines. But because it's already branching at the base, I'd have to say S. thurberi as P. pringlei doesn't normally branch at the base but instead has one main trunk that branches much farther up... forming a candelabra look with age.
And BTW, I'd say your plants are already past the 'juvenile' stage.

If the links stop working, you can see them here.

You are right this is no juvenile. The large one has no branches at all and while the smaller one in my first pics does, it is not necessarily the same kind. Looking at the areolas I am going to say pringlei. It is also pretty thick at about 9" in diameter. Have a look at the areolas here

Thanks very much Paulzie for the help. The big cactus is My problem now is the roots, they have some rotting sections. I think I will start another thread to cover that.

I still dont know how to post pictures directly and cant find instructions on the GW site either.

to post a picture just put an open bracket,found on the comma key with img space src equals quote and the address followed by close quote and close bracket found on the period key .
And you're correct, the first image is not the same... I hadn't looked at all your links.. .just the images that were reposted by others.

Thanks again, I dont mean to be an idiot here but I am still not sure I get how to post a pic. I will try here

HEY! I just previewed and it worked! Thanks, I will be posting many pics now I am sure!

Not so sure it worked, I only see a Big Red Opaque Square, as I have for your last several posts.
