There are several cold hardy tillandsias. Many grow high in the mountains in Mexico, Guatemala, etc, in cloud forrests that get the occasional freeze. If you're not living in a cloud forrest however you'll need to provide water during the dry times. Check the link below for names of a few. I grow most of these tillies and dozens more at my home in SoCal (zone 10a) and they thrive there. Fortunately, frost is a once every few decades occurance. I'd try T. ionantha and some of it's hybrids such as x brachycaulos, also T. stricta and T. tenuifolia--all of which are fast and good growers requiring little care. Good luck with your search.

Of my 600+ different species and hybrids I have lost only a couple; streptophylla and seleriana x ionantha due to freeze which occurred in January of 2007. There is no such thing as "zero care", all Tillandsias need some form of maintenance, although the T. bergeri you show in the tree is about as bullet-proof as can be found. Plants with thin leaves tend to need more protection. Mexican and Peruvian species are your best bet.

I grow about 9 different Tillys in my trees. When it gets cold the trees seem to protect them. I havent lost any of those. I also don't see many freezing temps and we get dusted with snow about every ten years. The bulk of my collection is Neoregelia and Dyckia and they are very forgiving when neglected.
