What colours are in the rest of the house?

I would suggest something more neutral since you will see it multiple times daily.

Light yellow kitchen, beige dining room and same color in the foyer/front hall which you can see coming down the stairs as well. Master bedroom also needs to be painted.

This is a fun idea for stairs, tile also looks good between steps on risers.

Color is so personal... i definitely think you should extend the color from your lower foyer to the upstairs. I personally love Sherwin Williams Kilim Beige. It is such a versatile color. Otherwise their Ivoire is also lovely, with some yellow/gold undertones. I would favor a console over the demi-lune table for traffic clearance. I think a collection of family photos in black and white or sepia in monochromatic finish frames would provide a dramatic entrance into your private family space. You can shop garage sales, discount stores or your basement for frames. Spray in an ivory, black or espresso spray paint to unite the look. Don't be afraid to crop photos and focus on the best of your family. Another special touch, is to add a chalk board to write messages to each other along with an apothecary jar of chocolate kisses to add some sweetness to the day.

Entry idea. I agree in keeping entry and hallway color neutral.

I like white or white-ish on all walls. Put 3 mirrors with brown wood frames at top of stairs. At end of long hall: family photos, or a hanging textile or quilt or rug or art.

I would...
Use light-grayish paint: light enough to reflect light, dark enough to contrast the white trim.
depending on your general style- choose a chandelier/pendant with a brighter colour accent, and use a similar shade to paint 2 shallow shelves on the landing wall. The shelves don't have to be the same length. I would have some "treasures" displayed-for interest. next to the shelves-one tall picture-can even be a framed poster if you go modern.

benjamin moore AC series has wonderful grays that go with most everything. they can be dressed up with large colorful paintings or toned down with rustic wood art.

Great colors from Benjamin Moore are: Spring in Aspen 954, Everlasting 1038, Lighthouse landing 1044, Lady Finger 1045, Moccasin 1059. Ben Moore sells small sample jars. Here's what I do for my clients. I buy a white foam core board at Walmart (or craft store), I paint it with the colors I am considering and then I can move the board to different areas of the room during different times of the day. Paint will change color - or appear to any way. It could look great on one wall but not so good on another wall. This way, you are not painting big swatches on the wall itself. And I always find it confusing to have multiple color swatches right next to each other. With the foam core board painted, you can truly just look at one color at a time.

I did this with mine. Painted with fern stencils. The stairs were done later.

I would add a mirror to to the wall...something light, not a heavy wood or metal frame. I like the table that's there, but try painting it then put a lamp with some other groupings. You have to take the time and purchase what you like and speaks to you. I recently took the books that I've read in the past (and loved) and grouped them on a similar table under a sculpture (it's a smart look). It's always a conversation piece for people and if they want to read a good book, I encourage them to take it and that frees up the space for me to purchase something new that I love to put in it's place! Pier One or TJ Maxx are always places for great finds. Good luck and happy hunting!

My entrance and stairwell look similar to yours....I painted the risers the same color as the woodwork--Behr's Linen, then then used wall quotes on several of the risers... "Sleep, perchance to dream" was so appropriate... it was inexpensive and it's a fun look. I may eventually stencil or hand paint the quotes. Another look that is fun is to paint the risers all the different colors of the house. I saw it done and (if the colors all have the same value) it was great.

As the space is narrow (small) I would replace wood table with metal and glass top table. Fill corners, I see tall narrow vase with wiry dry branches, something like that; should be airy, see through things, It's a good combination and work well in most styles. Plant will not thrive in the dark place unless artificial . And of course wall decor such as: pictures on one wall, mirror on another wall, could be art... I like diverse wall decor, but never cover all walls, eyes need rest. Whitish color in halls with limited architectural sophistication and decoration for me looks as lack of imagination, rather neglected than bright. A way is to add interest adding panelling, or "chair" rail painting wall in two colours.

I just hung family pics in black frames (ti unify the set) along with a few pieces of artwork and prints in my living room. I arranged them in a horizontal fashion to lead the eye around the room and give the illusion of a larger room. I love the effect, should have done it years ago! You might try this in your landing, not in the hallway since it might feel claustrophobic (lol). If you like the yellow walls I would try to find a much lighter shade, yellow always looks much darker when you put it on walls, might open it up a bit. Love the floors!

I love Zajac Interiors idea of the foam boards. I recently repainted my basement (ended up going with "Breath of Fresh Air", color of the year, 2014) and was amazed at how different paint colors reflect or absorb light differently. Even though the shade may look lighter or darker to the eye, the way light bounces off of it can change everything...and really surprise you. I'm sure there's a paint expert out there that can explain this phenomenon. :) My house was Benjamin Moore, Grant Beige for 10 years and when I repainted it yellow (sorry, can't remember the shade off hand), I almost felt like I needed to apologize--it was like it was re-energized! (Oh, and I really didn't mean to rhyme!)
