Canna in winter

I have some of these beautiful plants in my yard. Unfortunately, I didn't know what they were when I bought my house this summer, which was an unusually hot and dry one. I am also hampered by the fact that I know next nothing about gardening/horticulture, and didn't know when or how often to water them. It is now January, and I'm not sure if I killed them, or if they are dormant. How should these plants look in winter? Right now, they look pretty gray and dead. Will these plants return in spring, or should I look forward to planting new ones?
