Bleeding Heart

I planted several Bleeding Heart roots two years ago. They are in the full shade. They are alive and well. However, they start the blossoms right from the ground! My prior experience with bleeding heart was that the stems rose a foot or so, then the blossoms opened.

Do I have them planted too deep? Is it just that it is so warm this year that they are excited to bloom straight away?
