It is mostly used as a container plant because it is not as vigorous year round in areas that get some winter cold. Also, it is not available as sod, so it could be pricey to plant a whole lawn with it. Landscape architects such as Roberto Burle Marx of Brazil used it in pattern "wave" plantings in some of his designs alternating with the straight green form, and had also designed a parkway in south Florida with this combination in mind, but it didn't get installed per plans, probably due to cost and maintenance and lack of availability locally. You could get a similar effect using Scotch and Irish Moss.

I have used the variegated St. Augustine grass in hanging baskets combined with bromeliads and succulents, and it does look good in the warmer months. Winter appearance here in northern California,(Berkeley) leaves something to be desired.

I bought a few flats of variegated St. Augustine grass from a nursery in Vista last fall. Its really filling in nicely in my front yard. I bought all they had, but they should have more ready by now. Tom has a great looking lawn of it at the nursery that he harvests plugs from.

I'm bumping this topic because I am curious too. I just bought some from this website mentioned above. It came in good health and is starting to really take off. It seems to double in size every couple weeks right now. slowly creeping out over its pot I keep it in with an Alocasia (to ensure i water and fertilize it enough!) It is such a peculiar plant to see as it trails. Totally unique. It has, much to my own surprise, the plant that I've become the most excited about this season. Does anyone else have any experience with this interesting spin on an old standby?

I had visions of having a variegated patch in a strategic place amidst the green. It grew weakly. The only thing it was good for was as a trailer in a hanging basket or pot. There are much prettier plants to use as trailers so I gave up on this plant completely. If you find one at an affordable price to you, I wouldn't discourage you but I would expect you to join the disappointed club eventually.
