Where do you live?

I'm curious to know more about Canadian gardeners. Where do you garden? I'm in the beautiful Niagara Penninsula.

I live in the beautiful steel city of Hamilton. We've just gone through a very dry, hot summer but the gardens look wonderful. Hubby was very pleased with the back garden this year, and has agreed to give me a whole other corner. Now as long as I can hide the water bill, all will be well. LOL

I live in the beautiful Magdalen Islands in the Gulf of St. Lawrence about 70 miles from PEI. Needless to say, we get lots of wind. Gardening is sometimes a challenge! I have lots of perennials tho, many annuals every year and a lovely pond.

I live in the Southern Interior of beautiful British Columbia. Summers are normally hot and dry here, and the winters are moderate with occassioanl good dumps of snow, which then melts in a matter of days. Winter is generally over by the end of February.

I live in Ottawa, the home of, hmmm, rather not go there.
Ottawa I am a passionate gardener with a bad hip and allergies, Go and figure why is this my number one obsession. I have absolutely no grass. I have tons and tons of perrenials. I use annuals for my pots. Some once said that God laughs thru flowers. The beauty of seeing a new flower opening is a source of tremendous joy in my morning walk in my garden.

I live in Angus, Ontario -- a small town that's probably better known as being the home of Canadian Forces Base Borden.

This is my first year gardening, and I've had so much fun doing it! My dh and I have taken on several large projects this year:

    1) My husband built two raised beds so we could grow a veggie garden. There is nothing better than tomatoes you've grown yourself!

    2) We enlarged the front foundation garden beds and hauled in a ton of beautiful rocks for 2 dry stack walls. There are NO rocks in this area... I had to post on freecycle and drive 30 minutes out of town to get them! I think they are beautiful... definitely worth the extra work.

    3) I decided I didn't want any grass on our property, so I created a huge garden in our front yard and spent the better part of the summer planting perennials and shrubs. (I had a neighbor tell me I could take any plant or shrub I wanted from his backyard... I felt like I'd won the lottery and spent the summer shuttling back and forth between our two yards!)

    4) We put in a flagstone walkway to the front door in a 90 degree heatwave (note to self, do pathways in October from now on).

    5) I killed off the remainder of the lawn and have planted an eco-lawn (fescue mix) that won't require cutting or watering. The little sprouts are just coming up now...

I was pretty sad about the days getting shorter, until I stumbled upon the winter sowing forum. :) Now I'm totally pumped! I didn't realize how much variety there were in seeds compared to plants you buy at the nursery. So I've put my order in at Vesey's, have purchased some seeds of Ebay and have been contemplating trying out seed trading.

A big thank you to all the folks who frequent GardenWeb who take time out of their busy day to answer questions -- I don't think I could've done it without you! :)

Hello, I live in down-town T.O. I have 12ft. bananas in my garden some of which have been in the ground for 4 years. last winter I left my dwarf pomegranate in the ground... it died back but has since re-grown from the roots (it is in a pot now)I have hardy oranges in the ground... no flowers yet and growth is SLOW. I start a great number of trees in my garden for my mother's property outside Antigonish N.S. and I HATE SQUIRRELS, they uproot many many seedlings. Robb

I am just outside Ottawa in a small bedroom community called Greely. We have a half-acre lot - our house was built in 1988 and at that time, the lot was as bare as a baby's tush. Now it's pretty overgrown... we have huge trees, most of which we grew from seed, like oak, walnuts, buckeyes, catalpas. We grow lots of perennials and shrubs of all kinds, have a small but very busy pond and a monster vegie garden. You could say our specialties are: bearded irises, daylilies, exotics like bananas and cactus, lots of succulents, hostas. We have eaten home grown salads every day since early May - still going strong. This year's great success were melons - all the heat means they were sweet and delicious!

Live in Sarnia, South Western Ont. Bluewater country.

I'm from East-central Saskatchewan in an area called The Parkland. I live in a tiny little town not unlike Dog River - a few more trees and the odd hill here and there. But I get a little claustrophobic if I can't see 2 km in every direction at any given time, so I guess that makes me a true and true flatlander.

You guys are all so wonderful. I think I'm having way too much fun reading the posts.
Never been to BC, but it's on my list of places to visit. Nova Scotia & PEI posts are bringing back happy memories of a vacation there. Claubill, I grew up in a small town outside of Sudbury. My favourite pastime was blueberry picking in the summer & picking wild mushrooms 'in the bush' in September. I was devastated to see my 'blueberry bush' had become a subdivision when I visited there with my husband a few years ago. Other areas, closer to home, we visit occasionally, such as Acton (worth the drive) for sure & many other towns mentioned. Must confess, never heard of Sauders Bakery....will have to look into that one. Often shop in Hamilton/Burlington area. I'm loving this so much....I almost don't want to leave for our annual trip to Algonquin Park to see the beautiful fall colours. Can hardly wait to get back to read more. Oh yes, Kristine, love your blog.
    Keep em coming, pretty please.

I live in the northeast end of Toronto, near the Don Valley Parkway and the 401. We have a lot of green spaces in this part of the city. I have only been gardening for 4 years and every year the weather seems to be different. Has it always been like this? Am I just noticing now because I garden? The only consistent things are that the spring is wet and very short; the winter is cold; and that my clay soil drys out like a brick. I have a love/hate relationship with maple trees: great for shade and keeping the house cool; but their roots spread everywhere and make it difficult to plant and their leaves block out too much sun. I HATE SQUIRRELS! THEY ARE SO DESTRUCTIVE AND SELFISH!! If I got rid of the maple trees I would probably have less squirrels too, but right now I am enjoying the sound of the wind in the silver maple leaves.

I live in downtown Montreal. I'm not a native though - I'm originally from Nova Scotia. We've been here for 15 years, and I don't know for how much longer. I really want some real *land* to garden on!!! My garden is a paved backyard that I turn into a container garden jungle every spring. It's a lot of work, but it's all I've got for now :-/. If we ever win the lottery we might go add to the overcrowding of you guys on tropical Vancouver island!

    G'day!
I'm in a townhouse/condo in London, Ontario. I've got a patio filled with oversized pots of perennials/annuals (all perennials next year!), and a failry generous land area for other plantings....
I plan on a move sometime in the future and say I am here temporarily, so I have a shed full of pots in preparation for transplanting to the big move. Just waiting for my money tree to produce!
Hope this winter is more kind to my Eastern Redbud tree and I don't lose half of it to "top-kill" like the past three winters.
    Great gardening to all, Justine

Anyone ever hear of Bourget? Surrounded by cows, corn and strawberry/raspberry fields and apple orchards the famous St-Albert Cheese makers are near us ... smells of cow manure all the time, especially around supper when we have our summer BBQ time whew! .. Soil is a mix of clay and fine yellow sand - gardening is a REAL challenge out here, the clay devours my compost and purchased bags of topsoil - so far I must have spent close to a thousand bucks on bags of soil ... We got free manure from a horse farm, but we don't have a pick up.

Greetings from downtown St. Catharines, Ontario, and must garden or die. I rent, don't own, but my great landlord lets me do what I want with the property. I just replaced the small front 'lawn' with shrub, perennial and bulb plantings, and will be putting raised beds (for veggies) on top of the unused back driveway, which takes up half the back yard. The other half, formerly just grass & weeds,is now planted with bird-and-butterfly-attracting shrubs, perennials and herbs. I've been here about a year and a half, and this past summer, my garden hosted nine varieties of butterflies, a resident toad and my first hummingbird, who stayed for a month. I am soooo looking forward to next spring!!

Ummm ...... could anyone tell me what our Average First Frost Date is?? Been gardening for years, so you'd think I'd know, but I'm kind of in denial about the onset of Winter ....
