They grow fine -- and fruit VERY fine -- in So. Calif. You really have to LOVE mulberries to plant a tree.

The birds get all my mulberries. I know when the fruit is ripe when I start seeing purple bird droppings in the yard. The tree grows great.

I have a bush mulberry, Black Beauty (Morus nigra). It grows slowly to 10 or 15' but I plan to keep mine pruned within reach.

I have two mulberry trees, one fruitless, the other with fruit. The fruitless is a huge old tree at the back of my yard and provides a lot of shade. The 'fruitful' one produces wonderful berries each year and I have to compete with the birds for them! I recently had this one pruned back as it's near a block wall and the tree service told me it would keep getting bigger and eventually crack the wall.

My mulberry is the cornerstone of my yard. Yes, the berries that drop create a huge mess, so I would plant the mulberrry in a part of the yard where you don't mind not being able to walk around it for a couple of months of the year. After 26 years in the house where I live, I am used to purple bird droppings, purple concrete (the stains wear away, there are never any permanent stains), and purple paw prints on the kitchen floor. My mulberry is suseptible to whiteflies. This year I bought the lacewings (three sets of lacewings two weeks apart) and the whitefly population hasn't been a problem. It's a beautiful tree. If (when) it dies, the yard will not be nearly as nice. Beautiful leaves. Love it.
