I'd try thyme, for sure. Oregano, rosemary if you get the trailing kind, but it may get too big and take over your pot.Sage is another good one for the dryer area but also gets big. Marjoram is short, if you like that.

Get a bigger pot! Aloe grows so fast you will be absolutely amazed. Stick it in the back of the pot and plant your herbs in the front, then water the herbs and the aloe will get enough. I second deneciepie- thyme- it will spill over the edges and look beautiful with your spiky aloe. You can get several different kinds: lime thyme, french, etc. You only need a little bit of thyme to make an amazing quiche or great potato dishes.

I agree that you need a much larger pot. The 12" will work for the Aloe alone.

Thanks for the tips - first time I've grown aloe, and it looks mighty lonely in that big pot, but I'll take your advice to heart.
I'll definitely try the thyme - never cooked with it fresh and never too enamored with the store-bought dry stuff. Sounds like one I definitely should try.
My wife just put in a request for cilantro - any reason why that wouldn't also work fine with the aloe?

Cilantro gets tall and skinny, also will bolt quickly this time of year. I agree that , in this pot situation, something like Thyme will look nice.

When I use cilantro, I use a lot of cilantro. As westelle points out, it bolts easily. In my garden it gets very tall and gangly and has too few leaves to use. The flowers are pretty, though.

Thyme is yummy with yellow squash, eggs, beef, lamb, and potatoes.

I have my aloe plant with catnip plants. It's a beautiful contrast and a bonus for my cats ;-)
