need container ideas

I usually plant xeric things -- salvias, coneflower, etc.

I'm getting a large self-watering container with a trellis attached. It's from gar.deners.com and measures 16 x 36 x 48 wide. The trellis is about 3' or 4', not sure until it arrives.

Since it is self-watering this is my chance to grow something that needs water. I have very little idea what plants that would mean! I have thought about a climbing rose, if there is a less vigorous type in colors I like but then my ideas run dry. DH has been on about wanting a rose plant which is why it was on my mind.

Can I plant bulbs in a self-watering planter? Daffs and the like?

What container plants would go well with a smallish climbing rose? The container is deep so I think perennials would be pretty happy.
