Around here there are small landscapers (some do installation and maintenance, others are maintenance only). They are hurting for work because of the drought. Call some of them and get quotes ... the good thing about them is sometimes they know where to find plants of the kind and size you want and they get them for wholesale. No sense having you pay retail and THEN pay someone to install it.

broadwell's isn't really retail prices. they are on the left, old stage nursery is on the right. you could ask coy or his wife at broadwell's if they know anyone, or his nephew who runs old stage. it might not hurt to call around first and see what someone local can do for you. as far as which i'd start with- i always ck broadwell's first because if they have them, they tend to be a bit cheaper. if they don't old stage is likely to. they do have some overlap.

Wondering if they have anything interesting or if they are just an other extension of Broadwells like Old Stage Nursery (which doens't even have phone or address listing)?

Well, that really worked out nicely. I went to Broadwells Friday after lunch. Was able to talk to the landscape guy, and we worked out a deal on some plants and installing them.

They came yesterday morning and planted the shrubs, and I've been looking at them ever since. I got some 3' + Chindos for $15 each and some 3' Wax Myrtles for $7.50 each. Pretty dadgum good price I'd say, especially since some other local nursuries are getting $50 and $30 respectively. The install charge seemed a little high, but after the savings on plant price it all worked out to around $27 each...planted. Not too bad, I guess.

Does anyone know if Broadwells sell the Redbud "Forest Pansy" variety...you know, the pretty purple tree with heart-shaped leaves ? If so, how much for how big?

I sure wish they had someone answering a phone down there. I hate to go there and they don't carry what I want. I do know another nursery that does have it, but.......

i don't think broadwell's carry it, but across the street at old stage they normally have them. i think they were around 40 for a big 5' or more size- but that was a few years ago. the trick with getting ahold of coy at broadwell's is to call in the evening from like 7-8. i have old stage's # but i don't know where offhand. if i find it, i'll post.

Thanks tamelask. Stopped by this morning and picked up a little Forest Pansy stick (Old Stage - 6' stick). I was a little worried about how good the stock is, but I guess I'll find out in a year or so. Talked to owner(Coy's nephew I guess) and he said this "stick" would start to look better in a year.
We'll see.

how much was it? when i looked at them a couple years ago they were more than head high with a couple branches each (with a huge pot). i wonder if he'd have more mature, branched stock in later in the spring- these were fully leaved out. sounds like yours is a year or 2 younger than what i saw. redbud does branch out nicely once they hit about that height, though. glad you found what you wanted, at least. i've had really good luck with everything i've bought from them. yes, the owner is coy's nephew and strangely, he lives here in garner around the corner from me. nice guy.

Let me see, I think he said the 4-5' was $15 and 5-6' was $22. They do grow fast or I wouldn't have even given them a second look. Yeah, he did seem nice. I got the 5-6' one but it also had a few more branches on it. I'll probably plant it today as soon as it thaws some and get it started. :)

oh, wow- that's much cheaper than i recalled. thanks for posting the price. maybe i saw an even bigger size the time or 2 i saw them. i'll probably wait til the drought is through before i get one, though. they do grow fast. i hope it's gorgeous for you!
