Yup, still too early. You could try putting your potatoes to grow in a half barrel, maybe. Something you could put outdoors for warmer days and rain and then pull indoors when we still get the ice and frost and really cold nights.

"Not so 'slow'" dottie; actually today is the first day for potato planting in the triangle. Most of the time I forget that it is so soon and by the time I get to my garden supplier, they are gone. btw, already technically too late for peas.

Don't know..given all the volcanic activity this past several months we may have a March winter and a cold April like in 2011.
Every potato in my pantry is well sprouted but without leaf.

I'm just north of Charlotte, and I'll be planting potatoes Wednesday. I'd planned to plant yesterday, but I decided to delay because of the cold snap that's coming tonight. I've gotten into the habit of planting early potatoes (usually Red Norland) at about this time every year, and so far I haven't regretted it. That could always change, but I'll risk it given how quickly it heats up here once April and May arrive. As added insurance, I do plant under lightweight rowcovers, which gives me a few extra degrees on the chilliest of nights.

Shazaam, when do you end up harvesting?

Early to mid June.

How did it go this year, Shazam? I just ordered some Carola and Chieftan seed potatoes from Maine potato lady. Supposedly they ship late March but I added a note requesting early March shipment, we'll see how that goes. This will be my first time planting potatoes but I'm not new to gardening.

I have three veg garden lots; one with 6.2 pH, one with 6.7 pH, and one at 7.5 pH. I'm electing to plant spuds in the 6.2 from what I've read, they like the lower pH. The only thing is, the 6.2 garden is not a raised bed. Do you plant in a raised bed? Just curious.
