Since it has had no time to grow any new branches to fill in the gaps - if it can/will - then I would leave it alone for the summer, and see what it looks like next spring. Even then, I think I would only shorten the longest, lowest branches, and maybe not even that for another year - the more leaves it has, the more roots it can grow, to grow more branches and more leaves.....

It certainly looks like it will sprout new branches from the bare trunk, so I would wait and see. If you REALLY HAVE to do something, and if you want a low-branched, vase-shaped tree, then you CAN take off the center leader, back to the lower branching, but that's only if you HAVE TO DO SOMETHING NOW!!!! Me, I would wait and see what it looks like next year, and maybe in 2 years, before I got out the pruners or the saw.

This is the perfect tree shape to create an "arborsculpture" Search that word and also "Axel Erlandson" and "arborsmith". With some careful reading
as to the techniques you might want to coax your rescued sapling into an interesting specimen.

Is it getting full sun? If so the tree will grow out of its akward baby shape. Just give it time.
