I forgot to mention I'm trying to find the variety called "summer wine".

I don't have 'Summer Wine' but I do have 'Diablo'. Without full sun they look just like 'Summer Wine' to me. I believe I got them at Garden Supply of Cary but that year I saw them everywhere. I don't remember them costing all that much but I can't recall what the price was.

They don't look as stunning in Raleigh as they do up in the mountains. They seem to take longer to fill out. Mine do not get covered in blooms either but I have them in a shadier corner of the yard than most places I've seen them. To me they are like viburnums or hydrangeas, no muss no fuss, easy care bushes.

Okay thanks. I was looking for something a little more purple/deep wine for some accent shrubs, but that might not be it. Guess I'll stay with Loropetalums and Nandinas for year round looks.

'Summer Wine' was in all the stores around here last year. I think it is put out by Proven Winners, you might check for their retailers if you still want one.

I guess you don't have a deer problem? They LOVE to eat ninebark.

Well forget it then. I have deer all year long around here. Those guys think I have an all-night drive-thru or something. I ran off about 7-8 last weekend just off my lawn, and looked like they were headed to my salad bar...again, you can bet on it. I got 2 heavy boards and slapped them together. Wow!! Sounded like a shotgun went off...several times. :-) Hope they continue to eat out at someone else's cafe.

I have a deer problem and they don't eat my species plant - it's big and full of flowers. I haven't noticed them eating on the cultivars I got (1 Coppertina and 2 Summer Wine), but perhaps they just haven't discovered them yet - too busy munching on the Annabelle hydrangea!

Yeah, my deer tipped pruned my Coppertina last year, but most references suggest you do that yourself in the plant's first year to get a fuller plant. My deer tell me that they like the fresh new foliage.

I had a 'Diablo' at a previous house (near Jordan Lake) and they just stripped that Ninebark of every new leaf. It was a disappointing twig and I was a sad gardener!
