Lantana Question

I planted some Lantana at the end of the season when it went on sale really cheap. It looks totally dead and is brittle. It was definately alive last season but didn't have much of a chance to get establised before it turned cold.

What are the chances that this plant will come back? Does it grow back from the roots or if the top looks dead is it gone?

Thanks for any replies in advance.

In your area, Lantana will typically come back from the roots (never from the top) in the spring. No promises on your situation, though. Depends upon how cold it got in your area.

Cut it back to the ground now and wait to see what happens. Don't pull on the roots.

Joe....I'm right down the street from you in Murrells Inlet. I get mine in late fall, they usually come back, give it 2 more weeks before you give up on it. MIne have very small green comeing up. I almost gave up on my MW, and it's all coming back too. Catch me on Butterfly, I've got links to by habitat project under development.

Are you new to Myrtle? If so, I know some great garden people here, sho love to share and swap. You're welcome any time.

A lot of people grow lantana in this region and often it's hardy. It's one of those late to emerge though, so check for new growth buds at the crown before giving up.

I'm in the Midlands, and my Miss Huff has started showing green down at the ground. That's one of the hardiest varieties, though. I haven't noticed the neighbors' Sungold coming out yet, but I haven't exactly been poking around in their mulch, either. :-) It was such a mild winter, most Lantana should come back.

This winter was the first for my Miss Huff and it's already sprouting from the base.

My lantana - 4 different shrubs - is showing green at the base I have 6 other ones that were different varities (colors) - actually bought then in a 6 cell pack - that are not showing any green yet but I won't give up on them....

Give it some more time - it should come back for you. Mine were late to green-up last Spring. It should be safe for you to now cut the old, dead canes back. Also, much can depend on what kind of light your lantana is getting. The lantana I have in full sun (south-east side of the house) is already blooming! It gets sun all day, from sun-up, until about 3pm. The lantana I have out at the end of our driveway gets sun after 2pm, and it's only just now starting to show some green.
Don't give up on it...shouldn't be much longer 'til you see new growth.

After reading this I went out and checked the area that I had planted 3 lantanas last year and was so tickled to find small green leaves on them. I cut back the old canes and talked sweetly to them.
