It is their favorite thing to eat in my yard. They will take the leaves the first night, the stems the second night and sometimes come back to dig up the roots after that. All the while they leave everything else completely alone...until they run out of sweet 'taters.

But you did say that you had more than one. After planting one I realized that even one could take over a back yard on its own and the plant is incredibly easy to multiply by snaping off sections and putting them in water or right in the wet ground.

They do a great job of filling in around plants. I just wish they would breed one that was dark rich green (I resort to just planting regular sweet potatoes, but I like the spidery fine cut leaves of the ornamentals). All of them make plenty of tubers which are easy to store til spring.

Deer change their preferences each year - one year it might be daylilies and the next it will be something else. I finally put up an 8 foot fence all the way around the yard (820 feet!!!) and it stopped them. Now, one year later and they don't even come close to the garden or challenge the fence.

Was that deer fencing (netting on posts) or real fencing?
If 'real' that must have put a big dent in your plant budget!
Most towns don't allow fencing that tall.

So true a lot of my neighbors complain about deer eating their hostas I had "good luck" with them so far on the other hand I cannot afford to expent time and money on tulip bulbs they just love them,of course they have to be in full bloom to snack on them;last year lost all of my sweet peas to them ,I suspect... this year had a beautiful crop...that is a mayor $ invest. Yes - it hurts but I grow a large amount of fruit and deer love fruiting trees and bushes and there was just no way to have a garden with the herd living in the woods right across the driveway.

I live in this oddball neighborhood that is within the city limits but receive no city services (and pay no city taxes!) it is a rural setting but within walking distance to a major street and civilization. I am surrounded by state owned land that is used by NC State for crop research, so I look out at hundreds of acres of corn in the summer and wheat in the winter. I love that part of it. The part I hate is that they are not studying these crops as a food crop so they do nothing to protect the fields - so the deer population is huge and the deer are fearless (they will walk up onto people's porches to eat from their hanging baskets). I am lucky in that my neighbors hunt the deer (I'm pretty sure this is illegal) so the herd nearest me is only about 25 at the most. Down the street the herd is close to 100 (where the turf grass research is done). A deer gets hit on the road in front of my house once a month. I see deer every day while out walking the dog. I hated deer up until I put up the fence. I bought the cheapest deer netting on the internet (1000 feet for less than $300). It has not lasted even one year but it has done such a good job keeping the deer out that they no longer even try to get into my garden. I am now slowly replacing it with 8 foot welded wire. The bigger expense was the 10 foot t-posts. My neighbors hate the fence but even they comment on how well it works.

Try a motion sensor activated sprinkler. I bought one late last year after I didn't get anything from my garden except tomatoes, pepper, and corn. They didn't mess with my fall crop.

Mine is called a scarecrow, I got it from amazon, best $50 I've ever spent! The only deer track so far this year in my garden was way away from the sprinkler. And you could tell they made a quick exit!
