As I child (I am 65) I remember farmers making potato hills in the field. Recently several of us were taking about how they made them. They were like a pile of dirt that had a section dug out of the side so the potatoes were below ground level, I think. The door made from burlap layers was placed on the south side. Hopefully someone that really knows how to make these might respond and tell us how effective these were!

They are called clamps. You can store several types of root veggies in them. I've not tried it but I remember hearing about it as a child. I have a book- "The Self-Sufficient Life and How to Live It" by John Seymour- that describes how to make them.

If you do try it, let us know how it works! My cellar is sizable enough to store what I grow. I also live in the mountains in NC so it's a bit cooler here :) I've always wondered how well they work, though.

That would be a great solution except for the voles. Last year voles took my entire potato crop. Waiting to see what happens this year, some hawks have been nesting in my back yard and I have been doing my own vole hunting so have seen less activity.

Unless someone else has an easier solution I may have to construct an earth covered storage area of some sort - such as a container above ground covered with earth. Just seems like a lot to go through.

Thanks for the info on the book. I will check it out! We have moles and I feel sure voles also. They have been terrible this year!
