The first one is sumac (Rhus).

Sumac...not likely something I want to keep where it has sprouted...thanks

The second one looks like some sort of oak.

Looks like the Pin Oaks that pop up in my yard from the neighbor's tree.

Are Pin Oaks worth potting up and planting them out when they are a decent size?

Second one is definatly oak, got tons of them here. It does look like Pin Oak.

I have exactly the same things....first one is sumac. yuck! hard to eradicate too. I have a lot of it by my fence.

second is probably pin oak. I have a 100-120' tree of this that divides my south yard from my neighbor. it's gigantic and the trunk is just enormous. I think if you hollowed it out you could live in it! Needless to say...the tiny acorns is produces litter my yard every year, so I pull those little trees before they can get out of hand.

So I was looking online...I was several references to Pin Oak and Willow Oak being the same thing and a wikipedia has them as being different. I have been wanting Willow oak. Maybe I will pot one or two up and see how they do.

Careful, what looks like Sumac can be Tree of Heaven which is definitely something you don't want. Here is a great website to distinguish them, scroll down about halfway and you'll find the pictures that go with this sentence:

Note the sumac's new buds are in the center of the scar from last year's leaf; the ailanthus buds are at the TOP of the old leaf scar.

Of course if you don't want the sumac then it doesn't matter which is which, just get rid of it.
