Carolina Gardening

Please help me ID this insect...

While watering my plants this afternoon, I noticed these winged insects all around my outdoor sconces. ( I had left the lights on and apparently they are attracted to it)

I at first though termites but they are near the sconces about 7 feet off the ground. The body is skinny and about 1/2 an inch long. With its legs it is about 1 inch long.

Does anyone know what they might be or can someone lead to a forum that might know? I am in upstate SC.

You might post this over on the Nature forums and see if anyone over there knows what it is.

My guess is some sort of wasp or maybe a male (drone) ant. Ants and bees and wasps are all closely related and there are millions of them.

I'd bet it's male ants. i saw today the drones are coming out of the one fire ant nest. It's that time o yr.

Also, check out Sawflies. The maggots or larvae are the creatures responsible for eating away all the soft parts in tree leaves. Leaving a delicate leaf skeleton behind. I think they are really a type of wasp but they might be an actual fly which is a completely different group of insects.
