I had Cherokee Purple for the first time this year and they were delicious. Also had the Mortgage Lifter and they didn't do as well this year as in the past. Will have the Cherokee Purple again next year if I can find them.

mickey: can't you save some seeds from your Cherokee Purple? Would they come true from the seeds? Hopefully I'll get to try growing some heirloom tomatoes next year.

I'm going to try to save some seeds. I've always done well with flower seeds, did ok with pepper seeds too. Does Cherokee purple have any special saving secrets? Do you have to let them ferment?

Tried German Johnson for the first time this year, and they turned out great. Delicious taste and as big as a softball!

with all tomato seeds, it's my understanding that you ferment them, then dry them and save them.

I have never fermented my seeds, though I know most people do. I just smear the seeds so they don't touch on paper towels or napkins and after several weeks of drying, I place the paper in a zip-lock bag. If I am sending seeds to someone, I remove them from the paper just before I send them out. I have heard that drying on coffee filters makes removal easier after drying, but not being a coffee drinker, I have not tried that yet.

tomatomike: Until recently when I was told to ferment them, that's how I would have done it too. I say whatever works for you is how you do it. ;)
