Depending on their size when planted and their size and current growth will dictate if you need leaders lopped and shaping from the outside in.
First couple of years in the planting site it's more important to limit the top growth to enable the plant to set good roots for feeding and stability in the wind.
Crossed branches can be trimmed just to eliminate the cross with a straight cut. A couple years after you can trim carefully to the bole. Best to do in cold weather after leaf drop so you can see what you're doing and the wound is less available to bugs/fungus and disease spores.
