I thought of Huldine too. I have it and love it and mine has grown very quickly (which is important when you are trying to cover 14 ft) but has still remained easy to control.

'Huldine' is a great Clematis. It is still on sale at Bluestone. But I do not think it will meet a requirement of being 14' long. Maybe, some Montana Clematis or Sweet Atumn would grow that long. The pot should be huge though.

How big should the pot be for one of the above? Do JBs eat clematis?? Tks!

For the type II Clematis (like 'Huldine') you need at least 14-18" pot, but they will not grow more than 6' long. I've never heard about someone growing Montanas and SAC in pots. I do not think that there is a Clematis with all features you need. Maybe, you should look for something else.
JB do not eat Clematis in my garden.

Me too Penelope :-) I've heard very nice things about its performance and decided to order it this year. My Bluestone babies just arrived. They are very healthy and happy! $4.50-$5.50 for a healthy Clematis with nice roots, hard to beat!

Any other unique big flowered clem(other than purple) that grows in a pot for about 12 to 15'? Can you suggest a mixed color too?

Also do hummers use Clems?!:)

I personally prefer Huldine. It is a type III with smaller blooms but very floriferous. The blooms are flushed with some pink coloration, especially when they first open.

I am somewhat confused on Huldine. It was mentioned on this post that it was type 2,however, I thought it was considered type 3 so checked Clematis on the Web and they state is hard prune type 3.
Guess the main reason I am interested is that the Huldine I planted about 3 years ago has not really bloomed well for me, in fact last year it wilted and I cut it back and it did start growing later in the season but only produced a few blooms.Type 2's don't do that well for me so maybe that was the problem.

Huldine is a type III clematis as I posted previously. Sometimes when you are typing, a person can easily omit one of the Is when they are typing and a III turns into a II!

Thank you, thank you for the reply.Happy to know it is a type 3. No it's not your typing but it was late and it must have been my eyes. LOL !
I have done everything right with it this year- cut way down in the Spring so hopefully this will be the summer it shows its stuff. We have had alot of rain in Iowa and not much sun so I don't know if that is good or bad. Guess I'll find out.
