Replanting after breaking dormancy

Hi, new to clematis here. I've been reading up on all the info. Clems crowns should be planted 3 or 4" deeper than they are in pots? What about if it was planted even and now is showing signs of life? Should I still bury crown?

Another question. I bought a 1 gallon clematis with a bloom. It is done blooming. Should I bury crown? Should I pinch back?

Thanks for all the great info.

Some people bury their clematis deeper than others. I typically plant mine two to three inches deeper than they were in their original pots. The crown should always be buried and never be exposed above ground. Allowing the crown to be exposed is a great way to kill a clematis since it can easily dry out and a dried out crown is a dead plant eventually.

Pinching is always advised. You will never hurt a clematis by pinching it back. The crown should already be buried on a purchased plant. If it weren't buried, I hope you got it at a good price.

Cut it back and bury the crown.
